Jackson county, at a salary of Jl'500
a year and $1500 for Incidental ex

The Astoria 19th annual regatta will
be held Thursday, Friday and Satur
day. From point of attendance, var
ied attractions and amusements and
the number of participants in the big
races, It bids fair to outclass by tar
any of Its predecessors.
Dr. J. P. Wallace of Albany has de
clared that he will not accept the
democratic nomination for state sen
ator from the fourth district, and E.
D. Cusick of Albany, republican choice
will therefore have the field to him
self. Mrs. M. C. Reed, of Portland, was
chosen president of the Women's
Home Missionary Society of the Ore
gon conference of the Methodist
Episcopal church for the ensuing year,
at the close of the 28th annual meet
ing of the society at Albany.
Declaring that it would be un-American
and unpatriotic for a French ship
to lead the pageant through the Pan
ama canal at its opening, the Spanish
American War Veterans of Oregon, at
their sixth annual reunion, which
opened at Salem, adopted a resolution
urging President Wilson to give the
honor to the battleship Oregon.
The Interstate commerce commis
sion has further suspended from July
10 until January 10 the operation of
certain schedules for increased rates
applicable to transportation of melons
in car lots from certain points in Cal
:fornia to points in Oregon and Wash
ington. Burglars, who made a well-planned
raid on the postoffice at Jasper, lost
the greater part of their loot at the
last moment because they awakened
Leslie Wright by using too much ni-tro-glycerine.
Mr. Wright shot at
them with a rifle. They shot back
and ran. They left $300 in stamps
behind. About $50 in cash and some
Jewelry was carried away by them.
Petitions have been completed and
a proposed charter amendment filed
for the abolishment of the commission
form of government in Baker and the
substitution of the city manager plan.
The proposal will be voted on at the
general election in November, and, if
carried, will be followed by another
election In ten days of five commis
sioners to serve at nominal pay, who
shall employ a city manager from any
part of the country at an annual sal
ary of not to exceed $3600.

is made through the United States
Forestry officials, who have Deen in

practically a macadamized highway,
open to all classes of motor traffic
across the Cascade mountains. They
also have been instrumental in ob
taining nearly $20,000, including road
district money, which will be spent
to complete the highway this summer.

hart July 13 and continue ten days.
There will be about 2000 National
Guardsmen from Oregon and Idaho
and 50 regulars from the Twenty
first infantry in the camp on the plain
north of Gearhart. Every preparation
has been made for the mobilizing of
the troops and the establishment of
a good camp with all possible com
forts and conveniences. The program
provides interesting events for each
day, the principal features to be man
euvers, drills and military perform
ances of all kinds. The Guardsmen
will be furnished with clothing, trans
portation, blankets, meals and all oth
er necessities free of charge and will
be paid for their services. The guard
officers will receive the same pay as
officers of similar rank in the regular
army and privates will be paid from
$1.25 toJ2.50 a day. The Twenty-'

ANGELES HUERTAS AGENT?
Carraiua'i Secretary Avers General
Real Cause of Strife With Villa.
Washington. Alfredo Breceda, pri
vate secretary of General Carranza,
leader of the revolutionist forces In
Mexico, issued a statement here,
charging that General Fillpe Angeles
had stirred up the recent contention
between Carranza and General Villa
and that Angeles was in reality an
agent of General Huerta.
Breceda's statement, issued after a
long conference with Luis Cabrera,
one of General Carranza's representa
tives here, who Is earnestly working
for participation of the constitution
alists in an informal peace conference
with delegates to the Niagara Falls
mediation conference, admits a breach
in the constitutionalist ranks that
probably cannot be healed unless me
diation should succeed.
Prune Prices Good.
New York All indications are that
both the price of green and dried
prunes will bo high this season. Small
crops are reported from California and
the northwest and the demand both
at home and abroad for the fresh
prune, generally called a plum by the
consumers, has been growing rapidly
each year.
Considers Distinction In Censorship.
Chicago. An ordinance permitting
the exhibition of certain motion pic
tures to "adults only" was recommen
ded by the judiciary committee of the
city council.
CHAMPIONSHIP STILL
HELDJYJOHNSON
Paris. "Jack" Johnson still holds
the heavyweight championship of the
world.
In a fistic battle at the Velodrome
d'Hiver here he easily defeated Frank
Moran, of Pittsburg, on points in a
20-round contest.
The great amphitheater presented a
wonderful sight for although there
were some empty seats, the tiers were
crowded with representatives of every
element. The singular spectacle was
presented of several hundred women,
in handsome gowns, applauding the
two pugilists as they struggled up and
down the ring, feinting and dodging
and hammering each other.
There was never a second during
that period in which a victory by
Moran could have been said to be in
the realms of possibility, and in the
second half of the fight it looked as
if Johnson certainly could have pun
ished his opponent more severely than
he did if he had ten so minded.
As a boxer, Moran was absolutely
outclassed.
Wheat Lowest Price In Eleven Years.
Chicago. Wheat prices are the low
est since 1903. There has been a
break of 12 cents within five weeks.
For the first time in recent years
the United States is leading the world
in making low prices for wheat,
