Organized Effort for Better & Cheaper Roads The Good Roads department of the Prineville Commercial Club is making a determined effort to or ganize good' roads clubs in different parts of Crook county for the pur pose of co-operating in a movement to secure good permanent roads for less money than they have cost here tofore. Oregon has spent $18,000,000 in the last ten years on its roads and what has the state to show for it. This is $24,000 per mile for what tourists call "hog trails." It is to stop this great waste of time and money by co-operative effort on the part of people living in each road district that these clubs are formed. Crook county needs just such clubs. When road supervisors neglect their wook or squander the road money foolishly the matter is reported to the club at Prineville and from there the matter is taken before the county court. In this way it is hoped to save money to the taxpayer, secure more and better roads than what it is now costing the county. Drop a line to Wm. Pancake, Prineville, for further details of this new move ment. Journal, Dear Sit A false report is in circulation that I am taking an active part in a so-called recall movement; that I have jnade trips in the country with Judge Springer for the purpose of circu lating recall petitions, and that I also have a petition in our store for the purpose of securing signatures. Prineville Ladies Mak ing War on Flies " ' 1 " ' " Now is the time to commence war on the pestiferous fly. " Swat it early and often. This Is the edict that has gone forth from the Civic Improvement Department of the Ladies' Annex and Prineville is getting right in line. It is no longer considered a fad to swat the fly for medical experts are proving each year that much sickness and many deaths are caused by these filthy insects which carry disease germs from place to place and deposit them in milk and other foods. Since dirt of any kind serves as a breeding spot for flies and other vermin it is time right now that everybody in Prineville should got busy and aee that all old rubbish, manure piles and outbuildings are cleaned up at once. It is not pleasant to know that the fly you have brushed from your bread and butter has just come from an old outbuilding where it has been feeding anil covered with the-worst imaginable filth and disease it proceeds to scatter it over your food; but such is the un varnished truth in many cases. While all suffer from such filth, it is the children who are effected most seriously for a great majority of the deaths of the young, par ticularly during summer, are due to infection by bacteria. In order for these great enemies of mankind to thrive, there must be the means for their growth and dirt is the culture field or breeding place. The worst disease germs which enter milk and other foods are deposited in the majority of cases by flies. To "swat the fly" is a good thing but to destroy its breeding places is better, for a single female fly and her offspring, if unharmed, will produce from April 15 to Sep tember 10. 5.598.720,000,000. These figures seem impossible but they are given by the U. S. government expert. Dr. L. O Howard. The Civic Improvement Depart ment of the Ladies' Annex has taken up this anti-fly campaign and no doubt they will wage war on this dangerous insect. Let every one who reads this article begin a crusade today against its breeding places and then begin swatting it with a vengeance. Iaproreaeit Lcae Coranundmmti. 1st.
