San Diego, Cul, The United States customs office and postoffice at Te oate, 46 miles from tbls city, on the American side of the International boundary, were destroyed by fire ai night, following a raid. Eyewitnesses said the raiders were Mexicans. Frank V. Johnston, of San Diego, postmaster at Tecate, was shot to death when he resisted the' bandlu and his companion, Warren Dldlen back, was wounded. The customs office and postoffice occupied parts of the general store operated by Mountain Brothers. The bimdlts, It was proved, were bent on robbing both of the government of fices. Johnston was shot when be refused to give the combination of the safo. Johnston's body was found In the mouldering ruins. An autopsy de veloped the Tact that he had been shot through the hoart. A serious earthquiike occur red In the prefecture of Akita, Island of Hondo. Several persons In the city of Akita were killed and many bouses destroyed. In the village of Kowaku- bl, which was ruined, there were many casualties. The volcano Asama-Yama, 90 miles northwest of Toklo, Is In eruption. Sixty bodies were found In the basin of the Omono river, where 320 houses were destroyed. The village of Klta- meno was burned. Simultaneously with the earthquake came explosions and the bursting of flames from the volcano Asama-Yama, which terrified the Inhabitants. Akita Is a garrison town on the Sea of Japan. It does a considerable ex port trade, especially In rice. Car Robbers KIM Engineer. Peoria, 111. Two men were killed and two deputy sheriffs and a woman wounded as the result of an attempted holdup of a Chicago & Northwestern freight train at Manltus, 111., 45 miles north of here.
