FOR EVENING WEAR. Caiffura Not Complata Without Ornament. CM Hinmnntmrnmmj; I HOW TO ARRANGE PARTY I FOR CHILDREN ON FEB. 22. r V v- IRI ECCLESIASTICAL HELMET. Every woman who goes out a great deal In the evening is enchanted with the new coiffure ornaments. In Paris this winter flowers are not worn in the hair by smart women; neither are ribbon bows, except in the case of ex treme youth, and fashionable women the world over are beginning to Imi tate the Parlslenne in this respect The coiffure ornament illustrated Is copied from the headgear of one' of the dignitaries of the Roman church. It is built of passementerie with a crown of gold colored satin. Today's Styla In Names. What are the names that the girls nt today are bearing? Perhaps a good reply to that question would be to give a list of the Christian names of the cirls that make op the crews in a well known college. Here they are. exactly as nublished a few days ago: Adelaide, Mary, Priscilla. Dorothy. iXatalie, Lucie, Eleanor, Mary, Ethel. .Linda, Virginia, Henrietta, Valleria, Bertha, Anna, Rachel, Thelma. Mil dred, Hlldegarde, Marie, Gareta, Hel n, Carolina, Avondelle, Carolyn. Mil AreA F.Ima. Out of the list of twenty-seven Mary occurs but twice, though another time it appears masquerading as Marie. There are several names never heard of before, and the mothers of those girls surely did not lack courage. The Carrie that was changed to Caroline has now become Carolyn and Carolina. The foreign element in our country Is shown by such names as Linda. Thelma and Elma. There is certainly a variety In this up to date list Per haps the mothers are becoming mlll itant and standing up for their rights jln the naming of their girl babies. Then lu the washing operation' use the suds, sopping It on from the spongo Instead f rubbing the soap on a wet sponge ar, what is worse, rubbing It on the surface of the car. Before applying the suds the car should be rinsed thor- T ! oughly with, water, using a gentle 3.: stream. This Is Important, as all par ticles of gilt and dirt must be remov ed from 'the surface before applying the sponge. Apply the suds liberally i I w here the parts are dirty; then rinse J; off with clear water and a fresh sponge, flowing the water below the sponge to Insure that any grit and dirt that may be left on the surface are washed away before the sponge has a -.'hanee to pick It up and scratch the surface. After the tlnal sponging the surface should be dried with a clean, wet chamois. lu washing the chassis the same method Is In order, except that It may he necessary to use stronger suds. r, Where cars are In use over oily or I! HOW TO IRON A SHIRT. Youthful Evening Frock. Charmingly youthful Is this little own of white taffeta silk and shadow 0 . V I ' ii Sl i- A ' 4 1 Plain Diractiona For a Task That Many Girla Daclara Is Hard. Shirts must be iroued. but every one hates to do it. Most women will agree that next to dishwashing this kind of Ironing ts the worst task lu the house. There are three or four shirts every week. You can send them to the laun dry, and they generally look well when they come back too. Of course it costs money, and lots of It, aud then the shirts don't last nearly so loug. Much has been said about the man who makes two blades of grass grow where before there -was one. But how about a woman who can make one shirt last where before two were need ed? She deserves honorable mention at least. A woman who will not make an honest effort to be economical is a disgrace to the generation in which she lives. If all women knew how easy it Is to iron shirts the laundries would have to close up. The irons must be clean and hot and the shirt clean and damp. Be irln on the sleeve, not on the cuff. It the sleeve is iroued first the garment will not be mussed over doing the sleeve later. If you Iron the cuff be fore the sleeve the cuff will get broken when the sleeve Is Ironed. It Isn't hard to iron the cuff. Just read the direc tions on any starch box to learn that If you cover the cuff with a cloth It will not become scorched so easily. Next iron the neckband. Then fold the back of the shirt lengthwise through the middle aud lay It flat 00 the board to iron. If you do this you won t get wrinkles pressed into toe front. Then iron the front, being care ful to get the front plait, with the but tonholes in. dry and straight. Lay the yoke flat on the board ami iron till dry. If n hirt Is irnnpd this way even toe groucmest 01 men win uuve uu wu for complaint imiddv roads freuuent washing Is nec essary, aud this washing should bo done as soou as possible after the car leaves the road, as wheu this oil or mud dries 011 the car It Is very dllllcult to remove and will damage the var nish. It being Impossible under certain I oil and mud conditions to remove all the stains. In this connection it is luiKrtant that neither the bonnet nor radiator Is washed while It Is hot, as to do so will dull the luster, ruining It in a very short time. Another point which should be given Attention is that the same sponge should not be used for washing both the IkxIv and the chassis. Both sponges should be of the best quality, care be ing taken at all times to keep them clean and In proper condition. NOVEL ORNAMENTS. How to Maka Pretty Plaater of Paris Pictures. . Attractive pictures can thus be made with plaster of parts. Put the paper picture that you have ready into a dish in the center, but first grease the dish or wet it with cold water. This will keep the picture in place. Go over the picture (which should have the picture side down) with a soft cloth so that drops of water will not wrinkle the work when It is finished, pressing gently and firmly. Pour in the plaster of parls, which should be of a creamy, consistency, and leave until It bard ens. Just before it hardens slip In a little hook, a piece of string or make a hole for the picture to hang up by. In the morning shake gently, turning the plato upside down, and it will be ready to hang upon the wall. An oval meat platter makes a nice shaped picture. AT THE TELEPHONE. How to Maka Convereation Over the Wire a Succese. First Never pick up the receiver un til the bell stops ringing. In so doing the bell on your other party's wire rings, and he will auswer It, whicu causes a babble of voices and much ron fusion. Second. Do not place your mouth too close to the mouthpiece. This causes a vibration and thus prevents vonr belni heard distinctly. Third. -When you call a party give ceutral the district, number and letter slowly and distinctly. Fourth. -When you get the party your question should be, "Is this So-nnd-so?" not "Who Is this?" which is neither a pertinent nor a time saving Question. I'Ifth.-Speak In as moderate a tone as you would If the person were right beside. To shout also makes a vibra tion, which Is very annoying, and even a deaf oerson can hear a moderate tone over the ohone. Sixth Don't mention names or tell all vou know over the phone. This la a very unwise policy, and unless you have a private wire you have no right to monopolize It Indefinitely to the ex clusiou of those on your wire. HOW TO ENTERTAIN ON ST. VALENTINE'S DAY. A hostess who entertained for a card club had these unique In vitations. The meeting was on Feb. 14. so in bright red envel opes she placed hearts of lurid hue, oil which she wrote: "Hearts are trumps. No previous attach ments considered." The date, hour, name and address follow er ed. She served Ice cream hearts, X made by using a heart shaped 4 fliiflnf 4 OF WHITS TAl-'FtTA AND SHADOW LACE. Jace trimmed with rosebuds. The wired ruffles are chic, but the blzaiTe effect of the minaret tunic Is lacking. Winter Gloves. White gloves worn with fur become soiled In half an hour. It is scarcely for this sensible reason, however, that fashion has banished them for the mo ment, replacing white by antelope, iron gray or sable brown. It Is a supple skin, warm and com fortable. Button fastenings will soon disappear completely from gloves It, favor of the "presslons" which click Into each other with an ease and secur lty their predecessors never achieved. How to Increase Lung Power. Men and women can Increase theli lung power chest expansion it is called technically by five minutes exercise morning and night. Stand up straight on the balls of the feet, head thrown back, and Inhale deeply, first inflating the lower part of the lungs and then the upper. Then exhale slowly, letting the chest sink first and then the lungs. Do this fifteen times morning and even ing and you'll spend less money on colds and catarrhs. How to Clean a Percolator. When the perforations in a perco lator become clogged the coffee re quires more time, and It is quite apt to be muddy. Use a teaspoonful of oxalic acid crystals to a pint of water and let It percolate about twenty min utes. Then clean with a stiff brush. Lye or any gritty substance cannot be used on aluminum. How to Clean Coat Collars When the coat collar becomes soiled it may be cleaned by rubbing It well cooky cutter, some Iced with pink and some with white, pale green and lavender, all from harmless colorings. The score was kept by dropping candy mot to hearts Into a silken bug, cut out heart shaped and made with a drawstring nt the top. Gilt hearts were glued on the outside of bags In the way of ornamenta tion. Cupids dressed in red tulle, with gilt wings, were the place favors, and red carnations were the flowers used for the center piece, and one for each guest was laid by the plate. -I4--h-!-H--K-H---WH--l-i-H-W--!-H-H- .3S aw . 1,'".
