With the development of recla
mation projects in Eastern Ore
gon, the O-W. R. & N. Co. is
planning a campaign to educate
the wateruaers in the actual ap
placation of moisture to the land,
according to an announcement
made by President J. D Farrell
The company expects to send an
experienced irrigation man from
farm to farm to give actual work
ing instructions on the best way
to utilize the water. How not to
Irrigate is as essential as how to
Irrigate and the expert will put
the farmer wise to all the bene
fits and dangers of the work.
Hog Raising and Dairy
ing go Hand in Hand
Iteilumnil Spokesman: In the
spring of 11)12, U- A. Hraillcy, who
is funning north of the city,
brought from Iowa a registered
Duroc Jersey sow. Soon afU'r her
arrival aho had a lijter of 1 1 plica.
The five mules from this litter were
sold In the full for 125 each, or
1125 for the lot. The six female
of this litter wore bred to King
ItrtruK, a reentered Duroc Jersey
hour from the Ross Clark herd of
McMinnville, Oregon. The progeny
of these female now number WH.
I,axt week Mr. Hradlcy received
by express a registered Duroc
erm-y boar, nine months old, that
took first prize at the State Fair at
Salem, and came from the Primrose
herd on the J. W. Fruit ranch at
Itrooks. Oregon. This boar was
brought to head Mr. Bradley's herd
of Durocs.
Upon coming here Mr. Bradley
also brought with him two Im
ported Guernseys, and he has since
then been increasing his dairy herd
He has an ambition to some day
own the finest dairy farm in Cen
tral Oregon. He believes that hog
raising and dairying go hand in
hand, and that this combination can
be successfully carried on with less
expense and rink in Central Oregon
than in any other section of the
country.
Water Commissioner
Will Have Charge
Salem, Or .According to
decision reached at a meeting of
the State Desert Land Doard the
Hoard through a Water Com
missloner, will have charge ef
distributing water on the Turns
lo Irrigation project next year
instead of awarding this work to
a contractor, as Das oeen tna
custom in the past. Fred M.
Wallace, manager of the Water
Users' Association, of that irrl
gation district, and who is now
in charge of the work, will likely
be named as the Commissioner
Project Engineer Laurgaard
submitted to the Board plans for
a distributing system for one
unit of the project, and the Hoard
approved it, and directed work
to proceed on condition that the
settlers on lands in the project
sign up with the Board within 30
days. This condition was at
tached as it Is necessary to know
the number of settlers to whom
water must be supplied, before
the work proceeds.
Tho Board also decided to ere
ate no lien on lands in the pro
ject which had an existing water
right when the law making an
appropriation for Its reclamation
went Into effoct. The bill pro
vided th;t no lien should be cre
ated on any land that "now" had
an existing water right, and the
question was as to bow this word
should be construed. Decision
was finally reached that the word
had reference to the time whoo
the act became effective. This
will increase the lien on the lands
which have no existing water
rights about (1.03 an acre or
about $18,000 for tha whole pro
j ct.
The project engineer reported
that good progress was being
made on the Caylx drillings,
and the Board decided that as
soon as these were completed,
they should be tested and passed
upon by a board of consulting en
gineers, to be composed of the
State Engineer, the project en
gineer,.- and two engineers to be
named by the board.
