Talks to Farmers

folks, do you happen to know that
in the great Dakotas the great
wheat-growing sections of the mid
dle western country the average
for the wh tie state is nine bushels
to the acre. The Marquis was
seeded on the 9th of May. I be
lieve we should put it in earlier.
It is a splendid milling wheat.
am informed there has not been
moisture enough to wet the ground
half an inch since last spring, yet
the Manchuria barley cropped
twelve bushels to the acre. The
ground is in excellent condition and
retains a fair degree of moisture
still. AH thia should lead us to
hope for better things and you
farmers must help us to prosecute
research and experiments and help
us to find out things until we can
safely call them facts.
"Now the corn Merced Flint,
think it was, we sent grows but
not enough. I told Mr. Towner it
was the fodder we are after. We
shall yet see splendid corn grown
on that same place. To be a suc
cess in dry-land we ought to put it
in earlier. The fodder is not all
When this experiment is pushed a
little you farmers have taken a long
step in grain raising. The alfalfa
on the dry-land is not bad. It is,
in fact, in fine shape and will con
tinue to root and grow."
Prof. Shaw discussed most 'inter
estingly his trip to England for Mr.
J. J. Hill and his careful investiga
tions of the meat cattle conditions.
He referred humorously to his long
continued contention for the dual
purpose cow and stated that 80 per
cent of the blooded stock in Eng
land, the home of fine cattle, were
of the two service class. He urged
the growth of more pigs and said
the farmer would be wise to not to
try to run farms of hundreds of
acres but instead as little as a
forty and raise hogs.
After him Prof. French told of
of the conditions demanding in
creased production of foodstuffs.
The ratio of increase of population,
he said, made it imperative that
not only all the valleys but the foot
hills as well must be made under
scientific methods to produce a
share of foodstuffs for the &upport
of the nation.
The Institute party left for Burns
via Riley Friday morning.
All the Oregon Trunk representa
tives participated in the fair Thurs
day, assisted at the judging and
Mr. Freeman photographed some
of the famous blooded livestock of
Crook and in many ways they
showed a desire to become
thoroughly conversant with our
county, its people and its products.

Pig Barbecue at
Powell Butte Oct. 5
There will be a rabbit drive and
pig barbecue at Edwards' school
house, at Powell Butte, Sunday,
October 5. Everybody invited.
"The more the merrier," and also
the more rabbits will be penned.
The people from that section will
provide dinner for those who attend
and there will be teams in Prine-
ville to take out those who do not
wish to go some other way. There
will be people from Redmond also
and it is planned to have a rousing
good time as well as to get rid of a
good many of the pests.
The people will meet at Edwards'
schoolhouse about 9:30 and after
making one drive in the morning
will return to the schoolhouse for
the barbecue and dinner and then
make another drive in the after
noon. No guns or dogs will be al
lowed in the drive, but come and
bring your whole family and if you
haven't a family bring vour best
girl. We promise you a good time
and a royal feed. Residents of the
vicinity of Powell Butte.
