Clatsop Plains rancher, on Commer
cial street, near tho Spokane, Portland

The shooting came as tho climax
of a fancied grievance which Hansel

for what reason no one know and the

tion that was later withdrawn.

priest who confessed that he killed
Anna Aumuller and cut up her body
and cast it piece by piece Into the
Hudson river, "as a sacrifice to be

servation ward of the Tombs prison
under the watchful eye of Dr. McGuIre
the prison physician. Warden Kallon,
of the Tombs, declares the man Is In
sane one of the most dangerous men
ever ronfined In the prison, and In
this view he was upheld by Deputy
Commissioner of Corrections Wright.
From far off Mainz, Germany, there
camo to Mgr. Joseph F. Mooney, vicar
general of the archdiocese of New
York, n cablegram from the secretary
of the bishop, which said that Schmidt
had been declared insane there and
suspended by the bishop.
GAYNOR'S FUNERAL
SERVICES SIMPLE
New York. At the request of hlB
widow, who said she knew he would
have wished It so, the funeral of May
or William J. Gnynor, who died at sen,
will be marked by simplicity, without
orchestra, or band music or military
pomp. The funeral Bervlce will be
held September 21 in Old Trinity
church.
At Mrs. Gaynor's request the only
escort of the mayor's body will be
mounted policemen. There will be no
military accompaniment. Though num
erous orchestras Imv volunteered to
play the funeral music, Mrs. Gnynor
asked that only the regular choir ot
Old Trinity sing. She asked that
Gounod's "Ave Jlaria" be sung, be
cause, she said, it was one of her hus
band's favorites, and she often snug
It for him.
Mayor Gnynor waa voyaging over
ma on the steamer Baltic in the hope
of regaining his strength to enter the
three-cornered municipal campaign as
a candidate for re-election, when he
died suddenly on the Baltic as the
steamer 'was within a few hundred
miles of tho Irish coaat.
