HEALTH HINT FOR TODAY.
Curing a Cold.
The cure of cold can lie sum
med up In the one word elimi
nate. Eliminate by the skin, by,
the lung, by the kidneys and
by the Intestine.
To produce elimination by the
Intestines It usually I necessary
to take a laxative, for one Is lia
ble to lie constipated when tak
ing cold. At this time all the
scen'tlun of the body are more
or less linked up and unable to
do their work, so It frequently Is
necessary to aid them. It mut
ters little what form of laxative
Is taken so that the bowels are
cleaned out well.
Elimination by the kidneys Is
produced by drinking plenty of
water. The hot lemonade also
has sunie effort here, so is doubly
va Inutile.
Elimination by the lungs Is
vastly Important. In the early
stages many a cold may be cut
short by taking long drafts of
pure nir. Hroathe deeply Olid
hold the brenth for a few sec
onds. At night when taking the
swent be sure thero Is plenty of
fresh air In the room. Io not
hrenthe through the mouth un
less It is unavoidable. Force the
air to come through the nose.
Keep the nnsnl passages clear
by spraying the nose with some
mild antiseptic solution. The
snine effect was derived from the
older method of "snuffing" salty
water up the nose. The virtue
of nearly all the Inhnlutlona Is
that they keep the nlr passages
free so tlmt fresh nlr can enter
the lungs.
Aliove all. In the treatment of
colds do not "dope up" with all
varieties of medicine. The ma
jority of the patent "cold cures"
are conipjosed of a laxative and
something to produce perspira
tion. Unfortunately the major
ity also contain some harmful
drug, as phennoetin or acetan
Ulile. Watch out for these drugs
on the label, for they are depress
ing to the heart and may cause
considerable damage If used free
ly. The more simple the rem
edy the hotter, for the lifter ef
fects of many drugs are more
harmful than the condition they
cure.

Salem, Or. Repudiating a pe
tition prepared by State Treas
urer Kay and Slate Engineer
Lewis, the state desert land
board today forwarded a new pe
tition, clean from all personal
matter, to the secretary of the
interior asking for an extension
of time on the contract between
the government and the state,
with relation to the irrigation
project of the Deschutes Land
company of La Pine. The pe
tition forwarded today asks for j
an extension of two years, and
contains but brief recital of the
grounds upon which the exten-

The original petition, the one
signed by Kay and Lewes, among
other things alleged that the gov
ernor was responsible for the de
lay in the prosecution of work on
the project, and alleged that
every statement contained in a
letter sent to the secretary of the
interior in his fight on the project
was false. The governor un
earthed this petition and has for
warded it to the interior depart
ment, and it will now be up to
the other members of the board
to explain, especially in view of
the fact that today they repudi

tition which is void of all the
matter to which the governor ob
jected.
The governor contended that'
the original petition was false
and libelous, and established a
record to this effect at a meeting
of the board, Lewis admitting
that the statements contained in
the petition were false.
Those signing the petition for
warded today were: Secretary
of State Olcott, Sta.e Treasurer
Kay, Attorney General Crawford
and State Engineer Lewis. Ac
cording to declarations made by
members of the board recently,
it was necessary to repudiate the
old petition in order to obtain
the signature of Olcott to the pe
tition forwarded today, he re
fusing to sign any petition which
branded as false all statements
made by the governor in his
stand for a contract which would
operate for the benefit of the
state and settlers.
