Weather Conditions
at Prineville
July 31 to Augiut 6, 1913
Trineville and immediate vicinity
has experienced the hottest weather
of the season during the past week
While the official thermometer has
registered higher than in many
places in the state, the heat has
done comparatively no damage in
this section. The occasional show
errs and cloudy weatoer have atTord
ed much relief. We understand
the hay and harvest hands have not
been delayed because of the hot
weather. Mrs. T. M. Baldwin gives

Forbes Appointed to
Celilo Commission
C.X. Arthur, shaker of the house
in the recent legislature, has an
nounced the appointment of Vernon
A. Forbes, of Bend, as one of the
two house members of the Celilo
commission. Mr. Forbes was a rep
resentative from this district in the
legislature. James D. Abbott, of
Portland, Multnomah representa
tive, is the other house appointee.
President Dan J. Malarkey, of the
senate, has not yet announced the
names of the two appointees from
his body. The commission is em
powered to act with the state en
gineer in investigating the power
possibilities of the Celilo Falls on
the Columbia River for which work
flo.ouu was appropriated. It is
also authorized to enter into con
tract with the state of Washington
or with the Federal government,
should co-operative development of
the project seem advisable.
The appointment of a Bend man
to this important post is regarded
as a feather in the political cap of
Central Oregon. Bend Bulletin.
Another Fire at Bend
A two-story rooming house
at Bend owned by H. I). Brown
was destroyed by fire yesterday
morning. The loss is f loOO with
insurance of 1-1200. So lives were
lost but many of the guests lost all
their personal belongings. The fire
is supposed to have originated from
a stove in one of the vacant rooms.
Mr. Brown expects to rebuild with
stone or brick.
Laidlaw Experiences
Electrical Storm
A few days ago Laidlaw had one
of the worst rain and lightning
storms it has had for years. The
total rainfall was 1.73 inches and
is said to have done much good to
the crops.
The only damage done by the
lightning was where a heavy bolt
struck the Bell Company's line
where it crosses the Laidlaw-Bend
road at the trop of the grade. Sev
eral poles were splintered and a lot
of wire was melted, thus putting
the phone lines out of commission
for a short time.

The majority of this week's
shipments have been half fat

horned cows which have not had
their horns cut or tipped bofore
shipping, as they have arrived
on this market in a badly bruised
condition. If receipts continue
to be heavy, prospects are for a
