According to reports reaching here from Wheatland, the hop pickers held a meeting at noon Sunday and formu lated demands for Increased wasea. All were employes of the Purst n.nch, hlch ts partly within Wheatland. Purst and Constable Anderson at tended the meeting. Durst refused tha demand for more pay, the men be came abusive. Anderson sought to place a leader under arrest. He was disarmed and beaten but escaped and telephoned Sheriff Voss, of Yuba coun ty, for help. Voss gathered a posse at Marysville and hastened to Wheatland by auto mobile from Marysville, the county tvat. District Attorney Manwell ae eonipnnied him. When the machines reached Wheatland. Voss sousht to parley with the rioters. Abusive lan guage was hurled at him and he seii ed one man and started toward the motor cars. The prisoner's friends leaped at tie sheriff and beat him Into unconsciousness. The depu ties made a charge and a volley at shots was exchanged. Mauwell, standing by the automobiles, F.
