'Hybrid Wheat Chokes
p,,
According to the Oregonian of
July 24, a Umatilla county fanner
declares he has found a positive
cure for the "Jim Hill" mustard
which has proved a pest to the farm
ers of the Inland Empire during the
'" ''
planted a hybrid
.nr. luiiovn
wheat and found that early in the
season the mustard had almost en
tirely disappeared. A neighbor who
planted some of the same w heat had
a similar experience.
This weed appeared in Crook
county a few years ago. and while
it is not widely distributed any
method of destroying it should re
ceive the immediate attention of
the farmers. If the weed could be
cut now before the seed ripens
much damage would be saved to
future crops.
Interesting Programs
at Lyric Theatre
An appreciative audience attended
the Lyric Theatre Monday and Tues
day evening to see the first of the
"Mary" series of pictures, which
were produced in colloboration with
the Indies' World.
The next chapter entitled, "Alone
in New York," permits us to follow
Mary to the metropolis, where
shortly after arriving she loses her
purse, and without funds is com
pelled to go through a number of
trying experiences.
Announcement is made by Man
ager Morgan that the pictures will
be changed six times a week, that
is, every day except Thursday, be
ginning next week. On this account
the 'Mary" pictures and Fathe's
Weekly will be shown only on Tues
day evenings.
Arrangements have been made to
show two feature films a week in
stead of one as heretofore, one of
which will be shown Mondays.
Among those now booked to be
shown are, "The Millionaire Cow
boy," "The Guiding Light," "A
Drama in the Air," and "Syhlock,"
the latter being an adaptation of
Shakespeare's "Merchant of Ven
ice." Death of Mr. Thronson
Columbia and Caroline Thronson
received the sad intelligence of their
father's death Friday of last week.
Mr. Thronson died at the residence
of his brother, Chas. Thronson, near
Dayton, Washington, Tuesday, July
22(1.
During the last six months he
had been bedridden the greater
part of the time, his trouble being
indigestion. He suffered a great
deal, but was patient and uncom
plaining. He was 54 years, ten
months and ten days of age.
The funeral was held from the
Keystone Farm, Thursday evening
at 4 p. m., and interment was made
in the Evergeen cemetery, Covells,
Washington.
Mr. Thronson formerly resided in
I'rineyille, and was engaged in va
rious mining enterpises in this state
and Washington. He was a mem
ber of the Chapter of Royal Arch
Masons of this city.
Mr. Thronson is survived by two
brothers, Charles and J. A. Thron
son; a sister, Mattie Riggs; a daugh
ter, Mrs. Anna Frary, of Dayton,
Wash.; a son, Thron, Jr., residing
in Portland, and two daughters,
Columbia and Carolina, who reside
with their mother, Mrs. Henry
Cram, of this city.
