Grooming Hodges for

chosen sons" to head the ticket.
The latest "boom" under wav
was launched tentatively and
quietly during the last week from
a source as yet unknown, with
Arthur Hodges, mayor of Roise,
as the proposed head of the Re
publican ticket. He has been
freely mentioned also for ecre
tary of state and it is now be
lieved certain that his friends
will persuade him to make the
race for one or the other of the
two ollices during the next cam
palgn.
The mayor yesterday admitted
that friends had suggested to
him that he be a candidate either
for secretary of state or for the
governorship, but said:
I have not given the matter
careful or even serious consider
ation. In the first place, I con
sidered it too early and in the
second I am devoting tur at'
tention to the duties of tho oftlce
I now hold. There might be an
entire change in circumstances
between now and the beginning
of the campaign so that any de
cision x migni nmie now, one
way or the other, would be re
versed by the time of the elec'
tion. I am not now a candidate
for either the office of secretary
of state or for the office of
governor. Whether or not I will
be remains for the future to de
termine."
