Development of Oregon.
Portland. Carrying out the eovera
wient ' new policy of seekittg out what
agricultural lands may lurk within the
confine of forest reserves and deso
lating it properly so that it may be
thrown c?i-n for actual settlement.
Thief Forester Henry s. Graves ar
rived ia Portland from Washington.
During his visit here he eipett to
settle definitely for recommendation
what shall be done with tracts which
have been the subject of fifld agents'
investigations, both in the Siuslaw re
lion of southwestern Oregon, the pu
mice lands of central Oregon, the Des
chutes region and in the Cow lit river
keU In the Rainier forests of Watt
In poo.
Heretofore the government has
made little effort toward discovering
what tracts are suitable for agricul
ture. The prospective settler was re
quired to seek out the lands himself.
decide whether he could use them for.
agriculture and then' make hi appli
cation for settlement.
By the new plan, experts of the for
est service will pick out fertile tracts
now grown up in trees, report them
raitable for agriculture, and eventual
ly have them listed separately from
the general forest reserves, throwing
them open for homesteaders from
time to time. This will include land
from which the timber has been sold.
