DEFENSE OF MINE
OPERATORS STARTS
Will Endeavor to Overcome the
Testimony of West Vir
ginia Miners.
Charleston, W. Va. The coal mine j
operators oi eai i irKiiun "- ii"
entallon of their case Monday before
the senate mine strike Investigating
committee.
Much of the activity of th mine
operators' lawyers Was directed to
ward breaking down the story of
Calvin, an ex mine guard and star wit
neas for the miners, who told the com
mittee of hla experiences on the arm
ored train which shot up the camp
of the miner at Holly (J rove.
Calvin accused Qiilnn Morton, a
miner operator, of urging that the
train return and fire again on the
tented enemy after the fire from the
Mira once had raked the little village
and after Cisco Kitep had been killed
beside his home.
Martial law, which for months has
ground th Inhabitant of West Vir
ginia's still convulaed coal fields, ceas
ed by proclamation of Governor Hat
field.
The senate subcommittee viewed
Hatfield's action a an admission that
the constitutional rights of the miners
have been violated. The Imiulaltors
expect to report that the slate authori
ties did not safeguard the rights of
llm miners, although the charge that
the miners Interfered with getting
food at the company stores waa sub
stantiated.
Charges of peonage, which have
been made against the operators, ap
parently have not been sustained, and
this phase of the lniiilry will probably
be abandoned.

latter seeking to prevent wlldcattlng
by promoters, were among a big batch
of progressive measures signed here

HAWAIIAN VOLCANO
TO BE FORTRESS
Boston. American troops In the
Hawaiian Islands have taken posses
sion of the crater of a large extinct
volcano situated on the coast, and are
working night and day to convert It
Into a fortress capable of withstanding
a long siege. Ammunition and food
supplies are being stored within It,
guns are being mounted, a water sup
ply hai been arranged for and gardens
have been planted on the slopes of
the crater to provide food and thus
render the place self-sustaining In
case It Is besieged for any great length
of time.
Thla Information reached Boston
from an authentlo source In Honolulu,
and the communication further said
that American residing In the Hawal
lan Islands, Including troops, are much
exercised over the Japanese situation.
The communication says that Ameri
cana have moved Into the crater bag
and baggage; that living quarters are
being prepared within, and that guns
are being mounted all around the rim
so that a fortress capable of resisting
an attack either from land or Bea will
confront any forces that may try to
attack the place.
