The man. K. W. Allen, a plumber,
working for the Portland Heating
company, had become erased over hor,
a married woman. Ha rushed Into
the house at 0S Montgomery streot,
where she lived with her husband,
dashed up the stairs and Into her
room.
For 20 minutes with the door barri
caded, he kept her there holding off
with threats ot death any who should
Interfere with him. He fired three
hots at her husband, Jess Klaher, who
Is working on the construction of a
new fire station at Fourth and Mont
gomery streets, two blocks away, and
had been summoned to Bave bis wltf.
Timber Held Real Estate
Hlllsboro. The Injunction suit of
Charles J. Cowanlah, an Indian, to
stop the oporutlon of the Reese mill,
10 miles north ot Hillaboro, was won
by Cowanlah. The mill stands on land
sold by Cowunluh, und on whlctt he
holds a mortgage for $4200. His com
plaint In the case alleges that defend
ants will abandon the land after cut
ting the timber and that his security
Is Impaired. Interest attaches to the
ciiae from the Insanity charge brought
ugalnst pluintlff by one of the opera
tors of the mill. At the heurlng he
was declared sane and discharged.

Governor Sulaer ot New York has
named Miss Anna Morgan as one of

In a natural amphitheater formed by
sloping hillsides, with the grass-cover
ed hollow at their base aa a stage and
the blue sky overhead as a celling, the
students of the University of Oregon
will this year present Henrtk Ibsen's
drama, "Peer Qynt," before the yislt

The people of Gardiner, Scottsburg
and Klkton have decided to Incorpor
ate the Port of Umpqua, by a majority
of 89 votes. A bond Issue will be
floated for the purpose of building a
Jetty at tho mouth of the Umpqua.
The proposed port will have an as
sessed valuation of over $4,000,000 and
contains about 650 square miles.
Officials of Mllwaukle have an
nounced that the town will proceed at
once to sell the water bonds of $20,
000 authorized at the recent special
election and erect a new plant, refus
ing to purchase the two private plants
at the Drlces the owners demand. The
bonds run 20 years and bear five per
cent Interest.
Full negotiations have been conclud
ed with an English syndicate through
W. J. Wllsey for the sale of part of
Major U D. Kinney's Coos bay prop
erty for $600,000, and a deal Is pend
ing for the purchase et the remainder
for $475,000, making a total million
dollar sale. The minor portion of the
Kinney property which has not been
purchased has a questionable title ac
cording to the owner, and when this
has been settled In the courts, the
English people expect to purchase the
balance.
J. C. La France, accused ef substi
tuting a dead body for himself to se
cure Insurance money, was held to the
grand Jury In the Municipal court at
Portland. The Modern Woodmen ot
America are the plaintiffs In this
case. June IS, 1912, La France disap
peared from Portland, a body being
found a few days later on the Clacka
mas river, which body was claimed by
his wife and burled. The Insurance
companies took up the case and had
him arrested four weeks age t Ban
don, Coos county.
