    Homesteaders are
Beginning Work
Very many homesteaders are
just now beginning their work
on homesteads, which they have
taken. It is ot the utmost im
portance that they shall begin
rigbt. This paper will discuss
that question and more especially
with reference to the needs of
homesteaders who have families.
It Is especidly important that
they shall be able to grow food
tor themselves and the animals
that they have when they come
to their claims. Under judicious
management they may do this,
but without knowing how, they
may utterly fail.
It is presupposed that every
man who moves onto a home
stead farm a family will take
with him to that farm four horses
to enable him to plow his land, a
cow or two to provide his family
with milk and butter, a brood
sow that will nourish pigs to
give meat the following winter,
and a few hens to provide him
with meat or its equivalent in
ecss the first summer. He
should also have enough grain
with him to feed his horses, his
swine and bis fowls until he can
grow some the following autumn.
What money crops can he
grow the first year? Only two,
one is wax and the other is
durum wheat. Of these flax is
the surest as it will bear up bet
ter under dry conditions, should
the season prove dry, than any
other cereal crop. Bat to be
sure of a crop it should not be
sown later than early June. If
durum wheat is sown it cannctj
be sown too early. The flax is
sown at the rate of 1 pecks per
acre, and the durham wheat at
the rate of 4 pecks per acre, of
course it would be better in the
long run to summer fallow all
the land broken the first year,
and to sow the bulk of it to
winter wheat the following
August, but if the homesteader
must have some money crops,
these should be flax and durum
wheat.
Which are the crops that can
be grown for the live stock?
The homesteader can grow for
these oats, to provide food for
horses, barley'and peas to pro
vide food for the cow or cows in
winter, and hulless barley of the
white variety to provide food for
the swine the following, winter,
and also to provide food for the
fowls.
The oat crop is not so sure a
crop as the durum wheat on
breaking, but it may be made to
furnish much food in an average
season. In a very dry season
the results would be disappoint
ing. It would not be necessary
to thresh the oats for the horses
as in some newly settled sections
it might not be easy to get a ma
chine. The pea and barley crop
should be drilled in, using three
pecks of peas and 2 of barley to
the acre. These should be cut
when in the dough stage, and
they would be fed to the cows as
hay. The white hulless barley
could be sown at the rate of 3 to
4 pecks per acre and it would
furnish food to swine and fowls
the following winter, either in
the threshed or the unthreshed
form.
Corn is one of the best crops
to grow to furnish food for
horses or cows in Winter. Good
l

breaking. To grow these in best
f,.m a. u eV,v,u v -.-.b-,,,,
5 to 6 inches deep. It should be
packed with a disk as soon as
broken. A fine mulch should be
made on it with the harrow. The
corn should be planted in hills
3 feet apart each way. The
varieties to plant include the
Mercer Flint and the Northwest
era Dent. They should be
planted as soon as the danger
from frost is past. The culti
vation may be given in great
part by the harrow. Squaw
corn planted thus in hills will
furnish grain . for swine and
fowls, but it will not furnish
much fodder.
To provide for the home a
liberal supply of potatoes should
be planted. They will grow well
on breaking. The land may be
prepared as for corn. In this
way an ample supply of potatoes
may be obtained for home use.
If white navy beans are sown on
sodland and broadcasted, they
are fairly sure to produce a good
crop, and the same is true of
rutabagas The only labor in
volved will be the sowing and
harrowing. Vegetables may al
so be thus grown. In these
ways the homesteader may do
much to lessen the outlay the
first season.
The Stock Market
Slow Week in Sheep
Receipts for the week have
been: cattle 1522; calves 34: hogs
16j0; sheep 842; horses 67.
A steadier eattle market due
to a large proportion of well
finished steers. Top load during
the six day9 sold at S.15, others
at 8.00 and 8. 10. Bulk top is just
steady at S00. Butcher stock
, has been comparatively scarce
and all lines firmer. Beef liqui
d at ion was liberal and outlet is
none too broad. Medium and
poor stuff is difficult to sell at L
any price. Steers at 8.00, cows
7.00, bulls 6.00 and calves 9.00
are extreme levels in the cattle
market.
Swine trade suffered further
losses this week which would
have been more severe had not
receipts been small. 8 75 is con
sidered a liberal top with au oc
casional sale a't 8.S5. Tendency
downward and market circles
pessimistic.
Another slow week in. the sheep
house featured only by an 8.73
lamb transaction. All mutton
classes are strong. Demand is
good and prices on firm basis.
