L. VV. Hill, chairman of the
Great Northern board of direc
tors, ia more Interested In popu
lating tho vacant agricultural
lands of Orriron than he is in
building railroads.
Mr. Hill was Id Portland all
yestordsy. Today he is going to
take a trip over the Oregon Elec
trie to Eugene and back and may
visit the legiftlatute at Salem,
says the Oreifonian. Some of the
legislators have been urging Mr
Hill to address them today:
Plans of bringing settlers to
Oregon received bis serious con
sideration yesterday. Ha talked
the subject over with V. P. Da
vitlson, president ot the uregon
& Western Colonization Company
with whom he is interested. The
com pan r acquired 800,000 acres
of tbe original miliary wagon
road grant in 1011 and since then
huve been organizing their agen
cies throughout tbe country with
the intention of disposing of the
agricultural acreage at low pric
es. Tbey have land in tbis tract
that they can Bell as low as (5 an
acre.
' Our inquiries show that tbe
Eastern farmers are greatly in
terested in Oregon," said Mr
Hill. "I think inquiries hert in
dicate, too, that there will be a
good, heavy movement to tbe un
aettled parts of tbe state this
year." He conferred also with
J. 11. Young, president of the lo
cul Hill lines.
Mr. Hill hopes tbis year to
bring a large party of newspaper
men to Oregon and conduct them
on a tour of tbe state. He bad
such an intention in mind last
year but the big political conven
lions interfered with his plans.
The objective point will be Bill
Uiinley's ranch in Harney county.
Mr. Hunley wits in town yester
day and renewed bis invitation
extended to the newspaper men
of the Kast when he was a mem
ber of tho Western governors'
party that visited the Eastern
cities over a year ago.
Mr. Hill was greatly pleased
yesterday when be learned that
Franklin K. Lnne had been ap
pointed Secretary of the Interior
n President Wilson's cabinet,
lie denied knowledge of the re
puted intention of the Hill inter
ests to form an agreement with
the Western Pacific- to build a
connecting link between the pro
perties of the two roads in Ore
gon and California respectively,
giving the Gould eyslem entrance
to Portland and the Hills their
long-sought entrance to' Sao
Francisco.
In commenting on the excel
lent showing made by the Great
Northern in its report of bust-
hess for the last six months of
1912, which testified to heavily
increased earnings, he said:
"Why shouldn't we be doing
good business? We serve the
best part of tbe country. Our
territory is prosperous. Port
land, I am glad to say, contrib
uted handsomely to the big vol
ume of business we handled last
year."
He also called attention to the
fact that the Great Northern's
earnings have growu gradually
since Carl R. Gray left the presi
dency of the North Bank road in
Portland last May to become
president of the Great Northern.
Mr. Hill and his family will leave
tonight for California.
