(2) . The character of soil and subsoil. The finer and deeper the soil is, the larger its capacity to store water and the less fre quency of irrigation is required; while the sandy soil requires more frequent irrigation and is tiable to suffer loss from percol ation below the reach of roots. (3) . The amount and distri bution of rainfall modifies the ir rigation requirement and the dis triaution is most important. Ir- application. In working with sandy solid and heavy soils under the same climatic conditions the writer has found it necessary to use some 25 per cent more water in the sandy soils (10). The method of purchase and use. The best plan for the small irrigator is to practice rotation in the use of water, and get a large enough head to secure even and rapid distribution. Higher duty is obtained by this method and it is also obtained where the irrigator pays in pro rigation should simply supple j poriion to the actual amount of I B&eut rainfall. It is the June, water used. There are many other factors raia which makes the crop. The Jun rainfall was slightly above normal and the rainfall for May was about one and one-fifth inches above normal normal this year. A slow one inch rain is equivalent to about twice as much irrigation for it comes when there i3 little or no evaporation. The rains which come in summer are spt to crust the surface and may do more harm than gocd unless it is possible to cultivate. (4). Temperature and other climatic conditions effecttheduty of watar to a large extent for the amount of evaporation depends oa weather conditions after ir ligation ,5). The method of applying the water. It has been found that furrow irrigation saves about one-fifth over the Hooding method and deep furrows have an ad vantage over shallow ones. affecting the duty of water, such as the date of planting and mat urity and the fertility of the land. There is a greater loss in new ditches and dry virgin soil re quires more water the first few year?. The irrigator in this district should use nothing above the least amount of water that will give the most economical returns and the greatest profit per acre inch, irrigating wherever pos sible by the furrow method and following irrigation wherever practicable by cultivation. Any thing above the least economical I amount will produce unfavorable! soil temperatures; bad physical) conditions of soil; leaching of ; fertility; and accumulation of alkali. In time, tb.3 duty of water will be fixed scientifically instead of Put Your Farm on a Business Basis "OU iikiv be spending much more than is j necessary for power b do your plowing, seeding," harrowing, cultivating, harvest ing, threshing, silage cutting, hauling, etc., etc. An I IIC kerosene-gasoline tractor re duces the cost of plowing from about $1.25 an acre with horses, to less than half that amount. A like proportion of saving can he made by using an 1 II C tractor for the other operation. An I H C Kerosene -Gasoline Tractor can be used for so many different kinds of work that you will find almost constant use for it on your farm. It furnishes the cheapest and handiest form of power for belt and draw bar work. An I II C tractor is simple and therefore easy to manage. It carries its own supply of fuel. It is clean and safe, making neither smoke, soot, nor sparks. There "is no limit to its working hours. All bearings are protected from flying dirt, sand and grit. There are no rapidly mov ing parts to be quickly worn out. I 11 C tractors are built in 12. 15, 20, 25. and 45 horse power sizes. I II C engines for general purposes on the farm or in mill, shop, and fac tory are made in sizes from 1 to 50-horse power. The complete I H C engine line includes the tractors and also horizontal and vertical en gines; air and water-cooled; stationary, port able and mounted on skids; built to operate on gas, gasoline, kerosene, naphtha, distillate, and alcohol.
