May Have Bought Crook County Timber Prospect: ve purchase of 350.000 teres of fine timber laod in Con tr Oregon, with the evident in tenlion ultimately of connecting the property with the main line of fbe Milwaukee railroad system it the probable cause for ap proaching visit if group of Eastern capitalists, including A. J. Earlinp, president of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St Paul road; William Rock feller, John D. Ryan and others. A portion of the land is held by the Oregon & Western Coloniza tion Company, controlled bj Louis W. Hill, president of the Great Northern Railroad, and it is said that Hill, now that he has learned that the Rockefellers and the interests back of the Milwaukee system are about to acquire it, will make every effort possible to prevent the sale. Mr. Hill is due to arrive in Portland early this week, and it is probable that he will try to ar range a conference with Mr. Ryan. Mr. Rockfeller and their associates. The holdings of the Oregon & Western Colonization Company included in the proposed sale aggregate about 175,000 acres. This is a part of the original mili tary wagon-road grant of 800,000 acres made by tho Government and which later passed into the bands of a French syndicate, but which more recently has come ttnder the control of Mr. Hill and W. P. Davidson, of St. Paul, who is associated with him in var ious enterprises. Mr. Davidson arrived in Port land last night with the announc d intention of meeting Mr. Hill in a few days. He does not ex pect to confer witn the members f the Mr. Earling's party. The original wagon road grant included only every alternate section of land for a few miles on either side of the road from the Idaho line to the Willamette River. The eastern end, some cf which has been sold to individ ual farmes. That portion that lies near and on the Cascade Mountains is heavily timbered All the timbered sections not iucluded in the wagon-road grant and consisting of an additional 175.000 acres long ago were ac quired by private settlers, but since have passed into the hands f the Weyerheauser interests, the Morman Church and a few local capitalists, including Fred A Kribs. It is said that this property also is included in the Bale.' Negotiations for this transact ion have been conducted in New York, F. L. Marvin, of Portland, representing the Oregon & West ern Colonization Company, as e!l as the other owners. Mr. Bill, it is understood, has been "Willing to dispose of his timber Interests so that he might have more time to devote to the dev elopment of the agricultural sec tions on the eastern end of his property. However, il is be lieved that he did not know the Milwaukee crowd were going to get hold of it. Now he is coming to Portland again afetr having been here less than three weeks ago. It is reported also that the deal has progressed so far that Mr. Hill is powerless to prevent it from being consum mated. He would be willing to sanction the sale, it is believed were it to be made to interests were friendly to the Hill roads. The visit of the Milwaukee group of financiers also has re vived discussion of the proposed invasion of the East Side by the Milwaukee roads. It is pre dicted that the Milwaukee soon will come into Portland on its own rails and build a freight and passenger terminal on the East Side. Oregonian.
