Plant That LiW. Cold.
Climate affects the Inhabitants of
the sea Just as It does those of the
land. As arctic land plants cannot
flourish at the equator, so in the Are
tic and Antarctic oceans marine plants
are found that are unable to survive
In warm water.
Among the most remarkable of these
told water plants are the lamlnaria
ceoe, a kind of seaweed, which some
times attain a gigantic size, exceeding
In length the longest climbing plants
of the tropical forests and developing
huge stems like the trunks of trees.
Investigation has shown that these
plants flourish in the coldest waters
f the polar seas and that they never
advance farther from their frigid
homes than to the limits of "summer
temperature" in the ocean. The genial
warmth destroys them, just as a polar
blast shrivels the Bowers of a tropical
garden.
New England Leads In Granite. .
' The New England states continue to
produce more granite than any other
area of equal size In the country, al
though as individual states Wisconsin
and California are heavy producers.
According to figures complied by Er
nest F. Burchard of the United States
geological survey. New England pro
duced granite in 1909 to the value of
$9,674,715 as compared with $19,581.
697 for the whole Dnited States. Of
all the states Vermont led in 1909. with
a production of $2,811,744: Massachu
setts was second, with $2,104,019. and
Maine was third, with $1,030,024.
Fresh Water Flying Fish
A specimen of the African fresh
water flying fish is now to be seen in
the reptile house at the London zoolog
ical gardens. In the day It Is usunlly
poised motionless close to the surface
of the water. At night It darts about
eatching Insects. A species found in
British Guiana skims along the' sur
face of tLe water with the deep keel
f the abdomen Immersed.
