Bend Basketball Team Defeats C C H. S. The pirls of the Crook County High Jx-hool were defeated last Saturday night by the athletic as sociation of liend, bv the score of, t 9-12. It was an intere.-ning name' throughout, and in sj.ite of tbe tre mendous bandicap of age, weight; and experience our girls played a hard fast game. Roy McCallieter ha been coaching the girls for some time and deserves much credit for the excellent showing made. The game started with a rush, Bend early tafcing the lead. The locals fought hard and while they evened the score were never able to get the lead. The first half ended with a score of 7-5, in favor of the visitors. In the second half the locals rallied and the enthusiastic friends that thronged the side lines had visions of victory. lut it was of short duration. Maturity and experi ence proved too much of a handi cap for the game ended with the , long end of a 9-12 score favoring! the visitors. The game was fast but free from any unnecessary roughness. Thei locals demonstrated again that' they can lose gracefully. They did everything possible to make the stay of the visitors in our city pleasant one. The most hearty good will prevailed throughout. Bend has a fine team and may well be proud of them. Their coach, however, who acted as referee, seemed to be troubled j with short sighted nesa at least part of the time. Numerous fouls were called on the home team but only twice was he able to detect any offense on the part of his own pu pils. One other party seemed to find it hard to realize that she was not running the whole thing. Frineville likes to see every one interested in athletics but continu ally projecting ones self into a game where proper officials are in charge is very tiresome, to say the least. The girls are looking forward to a pleasant time at the return game which is to be played in Bend in two weeks. Was a Victim of John Barleycorn B. C. Wilkins, a county charge, died last evening at the Home Hospital of chronic alcoholism. He was about 50 years of age. He was brought here from Terrebonne about a week ago for treatment. Not much is known about him. He worked for Kama McCoin two or three months and with his wages went to Terrebonne to meet bis 6-year-old boy who was ex pected from Colorado. Time hung heavily on bis bands and be ought the aid of the cup that cheers. It was his last drunk. Wilkins leaves a widow, who lives at Colorado Springs, and the 6-year-old boy that arrived from tbe Colorado home. The Election Calendar. General election will be held November 5. Dry Farmers Should Raise More Corn Value of Crop in Dry Farming Regions is Great. Says Prof. ScudderofO. A. C. "In East ern Oregon one of tne greatest advantages uf the corn crop is that it is a very low moisture consumer, and since it will per mit thorough cultivation and moisture conservation, it may be used as a substitute crop In place of the summer fallow." said Prof. H.D.Scudder.headof theO.A C. agrouomy department in discus sing the results of the corn breeding experiments at the col lege. This gives a return for the handling of the Und, he con tinued, 'getting rid of the weeds and leaving the ground in nearly as good a condition for the wheat crop to follow as would the cost ly summer fallow. "Grown in this way on the dry farming lands, corn may be past ured off with pigs and briug as good or better profit than Ihe wheat crop itself. Though the summer fallow cannot be done away with altogether, in the more favorable years and those parts where the rainfall is lighter, it may largely replace the summer fallow. "In the irrigated sections of Eastern Oregon, and throughout the humid sections of Western Oregon, corn can be replaced by no other plant as a greea feed in the late summer and as silage thooughout the winter. These facts have led the college to de vote much time during the past five years to corn breeding. The idea has been to develop two varieties, one especially for the production of forage for green feed or silage, much needed in the dairy industry throughout Oregon; and another variety to produce an early maturing ear which will ripen and dry suff iciently to store and use for early fall feeding, or to pasture off with pigs, and that yet will give a yield of grain comparing favor ably with other grains. "Foundation stocks for these two purposes were developed in variety trials by the introduction of a number of the hardiest and earliest maturing corns secured in different parts of the corn belt of the United States, the Min nesota No 13 and the Minnesota No. 23 proving the best. They have been planted in separate fields, the best quality of high breeding being secured to begin with, and for two years individ ual plant selections have been made and ear row planting tests carried out. This resulted in marked improvement in tbe qualities of these varieties for Oregon conditions. "The pedigree breeding will result in decided addition to the agricultural production of the state, it is believed. That these varieties aresucessul where tried is attested by the score of letters received requesting seed at any price. Prof. Kyslop, who is working with meon corn breeding and I, are persuaded that this is due entirely to the tested merits of the corn. In 1910 there were sent out small samples of the best seed to progressive farmers throughout the state for cooper ative testing. It is tbe results of these tests whicn have created a demand for the seed laat year and again this year far in excess of the college to satisfy it.' After the Rabbit Metolius, Or. The Farmers Union of Crook county has sounded tbe deathknell of jackrabbits, which have become numerous dur ing the past year. Drives have taken place in nearly every section of the county. From 500 to 3000 are generally killed at a drive. Corrals are built at a central point. into which the rabbits are driven and killed with clubs. Those which break through the lines are shot. The rabbits are sold to the high est bidder, tLe bids avenging about 5 cent per head. Proceed" from sales are applied to the pur chase of additional ammunition. The people of the different towns are giving excellent assistance in the crusade. It is impossible to eimtte the value of the damage done annually by the little creat urea. The warfare tSf the farmers has become a matter of self-preservation, which will end only when the rabbits have ceased to endanger crops. Ed Parker was tu the city the first of the week from the ranch near Burns. Will Examine the Morson Project Salem. Or.. At the suggestion of State Engineer Lewis, J. K. Morson. president of the Des chutes Laud Company, decided to have an expert engineer ex amine his project during the Summer for the purpose of as certaining just how much water is needed for its irrigatiou Pro lessor rowers, ot tne mate Agricultural College at Corvallis, will probably be the man selected. Morson, while here, also con ferred with Attorney -General Crawford relative to the suit which the State Desert Land Hoard has instructed the Attorn ey General to brine against the company, to restrain it from sell ing what it terms options on the land, but which Morson declares to be assignments of liens. Mor son invited tbe board to bring the suit and the officials acted upon his suggestion. He ex pressed himself as anxious to have the question involved de termiued by a court as soon as possible, and as being sanguine that the court would uphold his conteution, that tne company is acting within its rights in selling the liens.
