Lont Man Kill Two, Injure One, of
Automobile Party,
Portland. Shot by an unidentified
man who opened lira with it pump
shotgun when an automobile currying

McCloud Stewart, son of Charles Stew
art, a wealthy grain buyer, were killed

er members of the auto party, namely,
Bruce Stewart, member of the Mann
& Stewart Printing compnny, who
owned the car and waa driving, and

partment of the Northern Pacific, were
uninjured.

blown, off by the second charge of
buckshot. He died four minutes Inter.
Stewart, who was struck by the third
charge, died ut St. Vincent's hospital.
Two Events Combined.
Roseburg. At a special meeting of
the trustees of the Roseburg commer
cial club, It was decided to hold the
fourth annual Strawberry and Rose
Carnival in conjunction with Its an
ual meeting of the State Grange,
which convenes In Roseburg on 'May
16, 17 and 18.
Rata Damaging Timber.
Cottage Grove. The theory that It
Is wood rats and not porcupines or
squirrels that are damaging timber in
tills soctlon of the county was ad
vanced by W. C. Connor, who brought

tion. Declaring that under present condi
tions It will be but a short time until
the federal government will own all
the land suitable for water power sites

this matter, to the end that proper
legislation may be enacted to enable
the federal and stnte governments to
co-operate In developing these great

call amendment to the people at the
next general election passed the lower
house ot the Arizona legislature.
By an unanimous vote the lower
house of the Illinois legislature passed
the setinte presidential primary law
giving the stnte ot Illinois a vote on
presidential preferences.
President Tnft'B campaign organi
zation controlled the meeting of the
Ohio republican state committee. By
a vote of 16 to 5 Taft was indorsed
and his renomlnntion pledged.
The Michigan house has passed a
bill providing for a vote at the t
election on a constitutional amend
ment granting woman suffrage in the
Btate. The bill has already passed the
senate.
Supportors of Senator La Follette
nnnounce that they have procured the
signatures of 1300 republicans to pe
titions for placing Mr. 'La Follette's
