Fort Rock and, after looking over phone line over sees 1 and 3, twp

not suit him. After demanding
and receiving $50 for bis trouble,
Schaffer, who had an ungovernable
temper, gave Smith a fearful beat
ing, dragging the insensible man
from the house to the eide of the
road near by, where be was picked
up by neighbors shortly afterwards
and driven to Silver Lake for med
ical attendance. The doctor's ex-
amination disclosed that two of
Smith's ribs were broken, his face
had been beaten beyond all recog
nition, and his body was a mass of
bruises from one end to the other.
It is feared there are some internal
injuries. The warrant was given
to Deputy Sheriff P. D. Reeder, of
Silver Lake, for serving, and be
cause Schaffer had reeisted arrest
two different occasions before, D.
W. Jones and C. Buick were sworn
in as deputies. The men reached
the Schaffer ranch Monday after
noon, the big German coming to
the door with a rifle in one of his
hands, just as they appeared in the

The coroner reached the ranch
from Lakeview yesterday. Inter
ment occurred today.
C. E. Schaffer had been the ter
ror of his neighborhood for two
years. He was a man about 40
years old, over 6 feet tall, and had
broad shoulders and immense
strength. In spite of his uneavory
reputation and quarrelsome dispo
sition, be possessed magnetic qual
ities that drew nearly everyone to
him. He was quite general ly known
in La Pine and vicinity, and while
not a member of the rifle club or
ganized here three months ago,
he was present at both the shoots
given by the club Thanksgiving
day and the Saturday before Christ
mas. He was an excellent rifle
shot and carried off more than his
share of the prizes at the two
events
