banner for this year, the Alphas
have been eager to meet them again
In a fair fight for the possession of
the debate cup. A the decisive
time draw near, both team are
redoubling their effort and they
will no doubt present argument
well worth hearing at the final de
bate at 8 o'clock next Wednesday
evening, Jan. 31, at the Presby
terian church. An admission of
ten cents will be charged in order
to meet small expenses.

again bnt has not yet ventured
down town.
The Baptist people are finishing
up the basement of the new
church. It in being done by vol
unteer labor. The ladies' aid serve
dinner to the workmen every day.
Yesterday there were 12 at work.
It is thought that everything will
be completed by tonight and the
basement ready for use.

Attorney W. A. Bell of The

this week a a candidate for the
ollice of district attorney for the
Seventh Judicial District, which
comprises the counties of Crook,
Hood River and Wasco.
Mr. Iletll is well qualified for the
position. For 10 year be has
served aa deputy district attorney
and thoroughly understand the
dutie of the ollice. He moved to
The Dalle two year ago but has
business here before the circuit
court every term, thus keeping
him in touch with each section of
his district.
Mr. 1111 ay that if he is nomi
nated and elected that he will give
the dutiea of the ollice hi personal
and first consideration to the ex
elusion of other law business, and
will make it an object to visit each
county a often a possible, looking
after and attending to the office,
and assisting the ollicers in the en
forcement of the law, and especi
ally the law to put down vice, im
moral acts, and the traflic in white
slavery, ile further deem the
salary of the office sufficient so that
whoever i elected should employ
hie time to the duties of the ollice
instead of making the duties of the
office a secondary consideration.
Mr. Hell served a judge ol Crook
couuty for four years, 1901 to 1908,
and by reason of his long residence
and acquaintance with the people
of thin district, and hi long ex
perience in the practice of law, he
should make an efficient and able
district attorney.'

Dalles where Mrs. Bleven has
been several weeks in the hospital.
She is improving in health.
Ed McCaffrey, who works at the
Hamilton S'ables was kicked in
the face Sunday afternoon by one
of the stage horses. His jaw was
broken and he was otherwise cut
up.
Charles Lucas Allen died last
Sunday at the home of his sister,
Mrs. Bints, who lives five miles
southeast of Culver. He was 19
years of age. He wa ick about
10 dayr. He leaves a father,
mother, two sisters and a brother
to mourn hi lo-s. The young
man wae a member of the Modern
Woodmen lodge.
