Game Refuge on Fsrms
Eugene. U E. Besn, locnl deputy

ment with owners of mnll farms
north of Eugene, bordering on the
Willamette river, whereby the land

refuse, and no one will he allowed
to hunt on the tract, 65 acres In ex

owners of the property are to co

tecting the game.
Blj Tract Bought Secretly.
Portland. That control of a large
rea amounting to at least 11 half
klooks by purchase from Individual
property owners is about to pass into
the hands of a big railroad corpora
tion, has been made known here.
Whether the Northern Pacific, the
Creat Northern separately, or the al
lied Hill Interests are back of the
project Is a matter of conjecture. The
Milwaukee road has also been men
tioned in connection with the activity.
Idle Men at Pendleton.
Pendleton. Lured to Pendleton by
the reports of great activity here,
scores of Idle men are now walking
the streets. With the extension of
the city sewer, the paving of several
streets, the construction of the east
ern Oregon branch asylum, and the
erection of several buildings, work
for a very large number of laborers
has been and still is available, but
the supply of men now asking for
work is far greater than the demand.
The Huntington Herald after Si
years of publication, has suspended.
Oregon produced products that are
valued at close to 115,000.000 during
the past season.

Dallas. Word has been received
kere that at a meeting of the general
tan of the state of Oregon, held in
the offices of the adjutant-general In
Portland, It was decided to hold the
next convention of the National Guard
Association of this state in the new
armory building just completed In this
city, in view of the strong competi
tion In securing this convention, Dall
s feels highly honored.
DIMICK HAS PLAN.
Business Manager for Oregon City
to be Proposed.
Oregon City. Mayor-elect Dimick
tn his message to the city council
January 3 recommended the appoint
ment of a business manager for Or
egon City. Judge Dimick says the
office can be provided by ordinance.
"I thlak the appointment of a rsn.
ble man as business manager of the
eity would be a step in the right direc
tion." said the mayor-elect "He
Would be of great assistance and un
questionably save the city money. His
duties would largely consist of check
ing up the work of the men In the
street Improvements and looking Into
the use of lifmber, brick, sewer piping
and other materials used by the city
and seeing that for every dollar spent
the city received a dollar in return.

Parma Cutoff Is Abandoned.
Vale. As a result of a conference
In Salt Lake this week between Chief
engineer Carl Stradley and represen
ttives sent by Vale and Ontario, the
eastern connection of the Oregon
Eastern railway with the Oregon
Short Line will be made at Vale, the
cutoff south of this city from Parma
to the Malheur canyon having been
abandoned.

Astoria. The injunction proceed
ings recently filed by the heavy tax
payers of Astoria against the Sanitary
and Reclamation commission to res

to go into court and confess judgment
and buy from the government at $2.50
an acre lands they have previously
bought from the railroad company in
