The plain tiff, who is a sister of Maybelle Gil ran Corey, alleges that her husband's affections were alienated by his par ents. Fifth Annual Apple Fair at Albany. Albany. Active preparations are being made for the tilth Annual Ap ple Fair, which will be held in this city November $ to 10. The associa tion is sending out printed premium lists to all the apple-growers of the Willamette Valley, accompanied by letters soliciting exhibits for the event. Commission Plan Sought. Astoria. Petitions signed by 214 registered voters asking that the new charter providing for the establish ment of a commission form of govern ment be submitted to a vote of the people at a special election on Wednesday. December 13, were filed in the auditor's office. SELL APPLES BY WIRE Hood River Sella to Hamburg by Ca ble Communication. Hood River. Unprecedented in the history of the Hood River Apple Grow ers' I'nion was the sale of a number of carloads of extra fancy apples to buyers in Germany. The method pre viously used by European fruit men has been to secure the shipments on consignment. However, the recent sales were made by cable communica tions direct to Hamburg. The sales ere made entirely on the reputation of the union pack. The great bulk of the Hood River Valley product will be marketed this reason west of the Rocky Mountains, because the large crop of local prod uct In the East and Middle West pre vents the union from securing satis factory prices in the eastern markets. The seasons' crop will be very much shorter than the estimates made by the growers early in the season. Experts View Site for Canal. Oregon City. Governor West, Sec retary of State Olcott and State Treas urer Kay, who compose the state ca nal commission, and Major Mclndoe inspected the locks and canal on the West Side and the proposed routes for the East Side canal and locks. To test the validity of a special city election held several months ago, defeat of which might re sult in the State Asylum for the In sane and the State Penitentiary be ing considered outside the city limits, Attorney W. P. Lord, Jr., has in the circuit court a case which Involves the right of state employes to vote at certain elections and to determine whether the annexation of certain districts is legal. Prior to the last census a special election was held for the purpose of taking the asylum and penitentiary and contiguous districts into the city in order to swell the sum total of the population by 3000 people. Attorney Lord sets up the conten tion that every voter in the district to be annexed who voted in favor of the annexation was a state employe working at the asylum. Jury Acquits Robinson. Prlneville. After standing for hours balanced between acquittal and a ver dict of second-degree murder, the Jury In. the ease of the State against Er nest Robinson, charged with the mur der of Louis McAllister, acquitted the prisoner. i Street Is City Dance Floor. 6prlngfield. A conference of the Young Men's Christian Associations of the colleges of Oregon opened at Albany Friday for a two days' session. Near there a large well has been struck, which recently under went the test of furnishing 600 gallons an hour without any apparent de crease in the volume of water in the well. The discovery of this flow of water has roused the citizens to their opportunity to secure a fine water sys tem at a nominal cost of running a pipe line to the town. State Capital Gleanings Threshermen of Oregon will meet in Salem December 7 8. More than $1000 was pledged by Salem business men for Governor West's project to construct a chain of roads between the state institutions. Citizens of Douglas County have pe titioned the governor for a loan of from 30 to 40 convicts to work on ths road between Roseburg and Myrtle Point. Snowed under by an avalanche of negative votes, the charter for a com mission form of government for Sa lem met defeat by practically a two to one vote. By using persuasive and coercive methods $1221 has been saved through the corporation department from 10 foreign corporations starting business in the state during the last six months and It is believed several hundred dollars more will follow. Increase in the valuation of taxable property In the various counties of the state are shown in the summary of assessment received by the state tax commission. There has beefc one ex ception to this rule, however. Mor row County shows a decrease of $.',72,072.
