The ladies of that lection meet at different homes to sew carpet rags and otherwise help tu make comfort- ble the family of Logan Mo Pherson that was burned out re cently. The men have not been idle, either. Four teams left for Bend the other day to get lumber for the new home. Everybody helps a neighbor in trouble. We are requested to announce that the ladic are to meet at the home of Frank Bain a week from tojay (October 19,) to push along tbe good work.. Special Meeting City Council There was a special meeting of the city council Tuesday evening Present Mayor Edwards, Coun- cilmen Ward, Yancy, Shipp and Wionek. The first matter taken up was tbe appointment of a city mar shah The name of Ed Smith was placed in nomination and he was unanimously chosen to serve the balance of the year. His salary was placed at 175 a month flat. The truck ordinance was pass ed to third reading and signed by the mayor. You can now run your truck on the sidewalk without fear of molestation. The old ordinance, or that section of it relating to running trucks on Sidewalks, wolked a hardship on business men, especially in wet weather. A petition was pre sented to the council requesting that East F street, between First and Third, be graded. The pe tition was signed by Dr. II Belknap and T. H. Lafollette for School District No. 1. J. N. Wil liamson, R. A. Ford, Wade Hus tou, R. L. Jordan, 0. C. Hyde and R, W. Zevely. The petition was granted and the marshal in structed to grade intesecting streets. The ordinance vacating a ten toot strip on First street was read a third time and passed. Airs, Ulaze given permission to repair the roof of her building on Maiu street under certain conditions. The question of bridging the Ochoco was taken up for discus sion. City Engineer Brewster had maps and drawings of the property involved but it was thought advisable by the coun cil to look into the matter a little further before ordering work to begin. Potato Show at Redmond Redmond, Or., Pet. 10. Red mond Is to have a potato show. All the older settlers have known for some time that the district will always be able to excel in the production of Bolanum Tu berosum, but the time has now come to proclaim the fact to those who contemplate making this their future home. The commercial club has taken the matter up and will super vise the giving and distribution of paizes, and the question of giving the matter publicity. There will probably be prizes tor the biggest and most freak ish potatoes as well as the best ones which will of course be the main point. Redmond does not feel compe tent yet to supply tbe world with potatoes, but we can do our share toward It. Several of our farmers have put In from Hve to tea acres each and many others nearly as much. As an instance Mr. Eby will harvest about 1000 bushels from three acres and the quality is excellent. Now that we have transporta tion facilities with tbe outer world there is an incentive that there never has been before to raise products in excess of that needed for domestic or local con umpnoD, ana ioa that reason we are paying more attention than formerly to the question as to what crop can be produced and marketed most economically. The writer feels certain that highest among these will be cream and potatoes potatoes most certainly if there is to be any scarcety of water. The writer feels that a butter exhibit would be quite in place to go along with the potato ex hibit. More and more cows are being milked each month, the growth beiug slow but steady. W e do not hear of any one who is going out of dairying, but al most every one building up and grading up their herds by rais ng their best heifers, selling off poorer-ones and occasionally buy ng a superior animal. Butter and potatoes does not eqactly emphasize "Hens, Hogs and Hominy" but it emphasizes that for which Redmond is bound to be noted and for that reason tbey are pushed to the front at this time. E. c. Park LOCAL MENTION C. A. Ivy is in the city this week from his ranch at Fife. A. R. Eastwood left Sunday morning for Florida, where his relatives reside. He intends remain indefinitely, but we will give him six months to return to Crook county. Dr. Lyman of Whitman College will give an address tonight at the Methodist church. Ilia subject i "America's Message to the Twentieth Century." This is rare opportunity to hear a most excellent lecture. Tbe public cordially invited to hear Dr. Ly man. Hugh Gee from Combs Fla came in Tuesday with some fine samples of garden truck grown on his dry ranch. Four potatoes weighed 13 J pounds. He had one potatoe that weighed 4 pounds. His samples of potatoes consisted of Blue Victors, Burbank, Early Eureka, Early Rose and Pear po tatoes. He had watermelons, car rots, turnips, etc. The Prineville Flouring Mills are grinding eighteen hours a day in order to keep up with the de mand for food stuffs. Mr. Stewart is paying from TO to 80 cents bushel for wheat, $1.75 a hundred for barley, $1.50 to $1.75 a hun dred for oats. Wheat is selling at Culver for 64 and 6S cents bushel. The Owls installed the folio ing officers last Thursday night T. E. J. Duffy, president; Frank Brosius, vice-president; Perr Poindexter, Jr., past president; W II. Wurts, secretary; . Granville Clifton, treasurer; S. 1J. Cooper, warden; Col. Draper, invocator; C. II. Proetz, sentinel; Theo. Minger, picket; Drs. Hyde and Rosenberg, physicians. Trustees, T. N.
