Will Develop the
Lower Deschutes
The first large effort to use the
immense power of the lower Des
chutes river was anaounced last
week, in the organization of the
Deschutes River Kim rock Power
Company, with ex-Congressman
M. A. Moody of The Dalles as
president and principal stock
holder, and Le Roy Park, presi
dent of the state immigration
commission, secretary and treas
urer. The capitalization is 11,000,
000. Articles of incorporation
were filed Tuesday of last week.
A London syndicate, Mr. Parks
said at the time, has underwrit
ten $9,000,000 in bonds for the
big company. The names of the
financiers who constitute this
syndicate are for the present
witheld.
Two power plants will be built
Work of construction will be com
menced within 90 days. All
rights have been secured from
the government, it is announced,
and the land on the banks of the
Deschutes for a distance of sev
eral miles is largely in owner
ship of the new power company.
The two power plants together
will develop 80,000 horsepower,
which will be used in pumping
water on a tract of 25.000 acres
near the mouth of the Deschutes
which will txj irrigated in this
way, and later cut up into smal
ler tracts.
The first of the two plants will
be built at the mouth of the river
and will develop 15,000 horse
power. The second plant will
be a mile upstream and will de
velop C5,000 horsepower.
What will be the additional
uses for the immense amount of
power generated by the two big
plants is not announced.
"The agents and experts of ;he
London syndicate have been on
the ground and have approved
the immense power possibilities
that we shall realize with the
Djschutes River Electric Rim-
rock Power Company," said Mr.
Park.
"The company is well financed
and it is assured of success from
the very beginning. The best
electrical engineers and con
structing experts in the United
States will be employed to attend
to the building of the plants and
their operation and maintenance
when completed."
For many years the power pos
sibilities of the Deschutes, thous
ands of horsepower going to
waste every minute, has been
the subject of many essays and
attempts to get the power rights
When the railroads were under
construction up the Deschutes
canyon, greatest care and super
vision were exercised by the gov
ernment to see that the construc
tion work interfered not in the
least with the potential power
development. The announce
ment of the new company with
its heavy backing comes as the
fruit of this long discussion, and
for the first time in history the
powerful Deschutes is to be har
nessed and used n the perman
ent development of the country
round about.
