Mrs. Evelyn Lane Walker, who
bad charge of the training depart
rnont in the Crook county high
school last year, has resigned be
cause of the severe illness of her
sister. The students and other
friends of Mrs. Walker rogret that
she is not to be with them this
year.
Warren Itrown, County Clerk,
left Wednesday to attend the
Pendleton "Round Up." After
spending three days at Pendleton
he expects to go to Hot Lake,
Union county, for a two week's
vacation. Mr. Brown states that
he has boen in the office for more
than five years and this ia the first
time he has been "away. He ex'
pacts to return about October, first.
C. S. Congleton, forest ranger in
the Paulina district was in town
Saturday and Sunday.
Klder Gregg will preach at New
tome creek next Sunday at 11 a. m.
and again in the evening.

Robert W. Bland of Grizzly
made final proof on his homestead
last Saturday before the County
Clerk. Antone Fogle and Chas.
McKenzie were his witnesses.
The ladies' "500" club held
their first meeting last Friday at
the home of. Mrs. Frank Foster.
Mrs. K. L. Aahby won the prize,
which was a beautiful hand
painted plate.
Andrew Noblo and family re
turned last week from a trip to
the valley. They went down the
Santiam but because of the forest
fires were forced to return by way
of tlio McKenzie.
Mrs. Kliza Scott and A. K. Scott
of Auburn, Washington, arrived
Wednesday. Mra. Scott will make
her home with hereon, L. L. Scott
and A. E. Scott will look after his
land interests here.
Addie Foster fell and sustained
a sevore Iracture oi nis leg last
Monday. There were three breaks
between the kneo and anklo. Dr,
J. II. Rosenberg was called to at
tend him, and while it was a bad
break, Dr. Rosenberg Teports that
he is doing well.
John E. Williams of Clarkston,
Washington, who was recently ap
pointed pastor of the I'rineville
MethodiBt church, has written Dr.
Fox that he will be unable to reach
I'rineville before Sept. 24. He
asked Dr. Fox to take charge of
the morning and evening services
on Sunday, Sopt. 17. -Dr. Fox has
kindly consented to conduct these
services.
Mr. George Millican visited' the
Journal office this week and
showed us a very fine specimen of
free gold bearing quartz. This
sample was sent Mr. Millican by
his son, G. Walter Millican who
has a mining claim on the middle
fork of Applegate. If this speci
men is a fair sample of the mine,
G. Walter Millican will soon be a
millionaire.

Her mother will accompany her to

Mra. Jennie U'Ren, who former
ly lived in I'rineville, was recently
married to Mr. Murphy, a busi
ness man of Eugene.

expects to drive a .taxi during
the coming winter.
Claude Wright, who has been
suffering from typhoid for some
time, is reported as past all
ohance of recovery.

preaching by the pastor. A cor

J. W. McGonagill, one of Crook
county's pioneers, was commit
ted to the asylum on Mouday.
The old gentleman has been ail
ing for some time, and George
Ramsey has been taking care of
him. McGonagill is being held
here pending instructions from
a son who lives at Ontario, Or
egon. George Scott was ridden down
by a man named Hendricks, the
latter being on horseback, Mon
day evening. The horse man
aged to step on Scott's right ear
and almost severed that member
from his head. Hendricks was
haled before Mayor Edwards (in
tne absence of Recorder Breese)
Tuesday morning, pleaded guilty
and was assessed 15 and costs.
Both men had been drinking.

T. E. J. Duffy went to Bend last
Friday and returned Monday.
C. II. Foster of Powell Butte, was
a I'rineville visitor last Monday.
G. W. Kidder of Oregon City
has been spending a few days in
Prineville, visiting with his daugh
ter, Mrs. Earl McLaugblin. .
Grant B. Frier who has been
spending the summer with bis
aunt, Mrs. F. A. Rice, will leave
Friday morning for Seattle where
he will re-enter the university.
The Shumia Literary Club will
hold its first business meeting next
Saturday, Sept. 16, at the borne of
Mrs. C. I. Winnek. A mistake
was made in the date in last week's
paper.
A band of horses recently sold
by Mr. George Millican to some
horse buyers passed through Prine
ville Monday evening on their way
to The Dalles. They are to be
shipped to British Columbia.
Mrs. Wood of Davisburg, Michi
gan, has been employe! to take
charge of the Normal Department
in the Crook County High School.
Mrs. Wood is expected to reach
Prineville the last of this week.

Rev. Huggins who served the
Methodist church of Prineville last
year, was sent by the last confer
ence to Moran, Washington. Mr.
Hoggins' congregation and many
friends regret that be is not going
to return to them. The friends of
Mr. and Mrs. Huggins join in
wishing them a pleasant and
prosperous year.
Rev. J. D. Lewellen's many
friends in Prineville will be inter
ested in the following item from
The Dalles Chronicle. "The Rev.
J. D. Lewellen, who has been the
minister here for the past year,
goes to Sunnyside, Wash., which is
one of the best charges in the con
ference. Rev. Lewellen has made
many warm friends in The Dalles
and it was with considerable regret
that they learned of his transfer."
W. A. Booth, II. D. Still, L. A.
Booth and R. W. Zevly returned
Saturday from a month's outing ia
the mountains of the upper Rogue
river country. These people blazed
their own trails and saw much
new country. Tbey were some
times forced to cut their way
through rugged sections and at
one place their pack horse rolled
down the mountain side. They
report that section of the country
very beautiful and well stocked
with game. They had many ex
citing experiences but the climax
was reached when Zevly and Stilt
killed their first deer; but we
promised to keep still so all we
shall tell is that they killed 18
fine big deer.
