Committees from the Red mond Commercial Club are mak ing plans for Railroad Celebra tion day, to be held there soon to commemorate the advent of the Oregon Trunk Railway in that city. The date has not been definitely set. President Gray, of the Oregon Trunk, has notified the president of the club that it may be possible to run a special there for October 2, but as the Central Oregon De velopment League meets at Burns on that date and tho rail road officials of the road want to attend that event, it was deemed advisable to fix another date for the celebration at Redmond. President Gray has now wired that it may be possible to get special trains there aoout Sep tember 3, or perhaps sooner, and the club has taken the mat ter up with General Passenger Agent Cotnan. If possible the celebration is to be held the latter part of this month. Quite a delegation of members of the Portland Commercial Club has promised to attend ihe celebra tion there, and the railroad of ficials of the Oregon Trunk and Deschutes roads have signified their intention of being there to help along with the ceremonies. Governor West and other state officials will also be there. The programme of the day will con sist of baseball games, with good sized purses; Wild West bronco busting, band concerts, speak ing by prominent men, and a big banquet. Preparations have al ready been made to take care of the big crowd that will come from all parts of Central Oregon, as well as from Portland and the Willamette Valley. I Southern Pacific File Answer. The long expected answer oj the Southern- Pacific railroad company to the suit filed by the government for the recovery of 2,273,000 acres of land held by the company as state grant lands was filed at Salem on the 6th. The railroad company in its answer holds that the erovem- ment has for forty years collect- j ed taxes on the unsold portions of the land involved and made ilo protest against the patenting of the lands in question. In the government's suit the company was charged with for feiting all its rights to posses sion of the land involved when it sold the land off in tracts con taining more than 160 acres to more than one individual and at more than 2.50 an acre, as was specified when the land was giv en the railroad company. The value of the land included in this grant and over which the suit is pending, is $70,000,000. Suit was brought some time ago by the government on the grounds above to annul the title LOCAL MENTION IfMaine stays dry. -The total vote stood: For repeal, 60,216; against repeal, 60,511, leaving a majority of 295 againtl repeal. We have an abundance of good material this year and .Mr, Brewster, who did such excel lent work last fall, is tn Chicago studying the game. He will soon return and very generously offers to help us again this year. Negotiations are on foot for a series of games with Portland teams and we will be able to give a good account of ourselves. We think we can nrovn that tho Upon the petition of numerous !Crook County Hi h , th leaders in every way. residents of Lake county, en dorsed by Senator Bourne, the secretary of the interior has des ignated as subject to entry un- Ider the enlarged to the corporations grant lands luerlne enlarged nomesteaa act, in this state. After a very hard llands io TP8" 2(5 and 27 S- RanS- legal over the company's demur rer Judge Wolverton overruled it, and this answer would appear to mean that the corporation ex pects to fight the case through to a finish. In fact, one of the greatest arrays of legal talent ever lined up in any case in the history of the country will prob ably clash when this answer comes up to issue and the final result will be watched for by the general public as it will be one of wide interest, not only in Oregon but all over the United States. Those who are waiting to take up homesteads on the company's lands, however, would better come to Central Oregon to settle, for there is a strong probability that most of them will die of old age long before the final deter mination of this celebrated suit. If the company loses in the lower court and there is every reason to believe it will lose there is still the circuit ceurt cf .appeals, and finally the United States su preme court, either of which may re verse the district court. Both are Italians, and both were intoxicated at the time. The ; quarrel was who should occupy j a certain bunk in the bunk house, j and Rossi, being the larger man, slapped his companion, who after repeated attacks drew his knife and cut Rossi so badly that the Opal City surgeons wero doubtful as to his recovery.
