INDIANS DEFY COURT ACT
Red Elk and Tribesmen Drive Whites
From Water Trenches.
Pendletoa. Refusing to abide by
the decisions of the courts, a number
Of Indiaas. under the leadership of
Red Elk, one of the head men of the
t'matllla tribe, drove from their
ranches the crew of workmen which
Is employed tn developing the Thorn
Hollow Springs, from which the city
expects to get its supply of mountain
water. After the workmen had been
driven away the Indians took hoes snd
filled up' the trenches which had been
4ug.
Red Ek is the son of Wentx, the
Indian woman who owns the land
upon which the springs are located.
She refused to sell the land, but the
cify brought a condemnation surt and
a compelled to pay her $4000. She
has refused to accept the money. It
was at her bidding that Red Elk and
the other braves, armed with rifles,
drove the white workmen from the
ditches.
Ginger Hermann's Aunt Dies.
MarshBeld. Mrs. W. A. Border, a
pioneer of Coos County, died at the
tiome of her daughter, Sirs. L. W.
Traver, in this city. She for years
bad been a resident of the Coquille
Valley, living near Myrtle PoinL She
was a sister of Mrs. Hermann,
toother of Binger Hermann of Rose
feurg. f Biggest Catch 23.5 Tons.
Astoria. According to the reports
thus far available, the "high boat"
among the gillnetters during the past
fishing season was operated by C.
Ehogren, who fished for the Tallant
Crant Packing Company.
His catch for the season was 23'i
tons cf salmon, which netted him and
his boat-puller $3290 for their season's
work.
Prison Hangs In Mid-air.
Medford. Suspended In midair, 13
prisoners are sleeping in their steel
cage In jail with nothing but two ca
bles supporting them. The cage is
being hoisted to the top of the new
Jail to make room for the $G."00 cells
that have been contracted for and
Which will be put In soon.
NEW ALFALFA PEST FOUND
Professor O'Gara Makes Discovery
in Southern Oregon.
Medford. New crown (rail, a dis
ease that effects the reus and tops ot
alfalfa, and which is unknown to the
Department of Agriculture at. Wash
ington, D. C, has been discovered by
Professor P. J. O'Gara, former govern
ment pathologist, now employed by
Jackson Otinty. The affected plants
ehow numerous gal's which inhabit
the growth and which, if allowed to
epread, :!! destroy the alfalfa crop
of an -nitre valley.

Monmouth. On September IS the
Oregon State Normal at Monmouth

have called good roads meetings.

Three new fanners' high schools,
under the union district plan, will be
opened in Lane County this fall, dou
bling the number ot union high

Senator George E. Chamberlain will
not leave Washington, D. C, for home

ness matters he has before the de
partment Wolves have done so much damage
among cattle on hillside and mountain

The wife of Major L. D. Kinney
has filed In the probate court at
Marshfield a petition asking that she
be named guardian of her husband.
The petition sets forth that Major
Kinney haa suffered a nervous break
down and is IncapaUe ot attending to
his business affairs.
State Capital Gleanings
After Its long summer adjourn
ment the supreme court began listen
ing to arguments of casus again Tues
day. The State of Oregon will do no
more credit business, especially in
the corporation department, accord
ing to an ultimatum issued by Corpor
ation Clerk Babcock.
Completed books containing the
course of study have come from the
hands of the printer for distribution,
snd a large consignment of them has
already been delivered to the office of
the superintendent of public instruc
tion. Suit for a restraining order to pro
hibit the Welch lines cf the Portland,
Eugene & Eastern from doing work
on Front street, in the city of Salem,
and also to revoke the franchise of the
lines there, was started in circuit
court by City Attorney Corby.
The general land office has made a
ruling in favor of the desert land en
trjman in this state, which enables
the entryman on a desert claim to
make final proof and secure title to
his desert claim, before securing final
water right certificate from the state.
After passing 30 years In the In
dian service, during which time he has
experienced many narrow escapes
from death in Montana's Indian days,
W. P. Campbell, one of the veterans
of the servloe, resigned his position
as assistant superintendent of the
Chemawa Indian School.
