Jenkins' Ear.
There was a war known as the war
Cf Jenkins' ear. It came about in the
renewing way: in tne year 1731 an
English merchant vessel was board
d by a Spanish guardship, and the
captain, one Iiobert Jenkins, was most
cruelly used, one of his ears being torn
off in the scrimmage. Obtaining no
redress by appealing to his govern
ment, he appeared before parliament
In lioS, when the convention of the
Pardo was so excitedly discussed that
war followed. Jenkins' storv was veri
fled by the admiralty records so re
cently as IS'jO Exchange.
Gagging the Orator.
The Swiss understood the art of pnb
lic dinners. In the eyes of some per
sons there is. however, one drawback
the after dinner speeches are inter
minably long. In bygone days the
people of Heme seem to have awak
ened to a sense of the infliction of
long after' dinner speeches, and they
hit upon a plan, which is observed tt
this day, for the purpose of cutting
orators short when they become too
long. A man wearing a bear's skin
stands near the speaker, and if the
latter becomes prosy and wandering
and drawn out In his remarks then the
bear advances very gravely and just
lays its claws u;ion the orator's mouth.
This method has never failed so far

Portugal'g Decline.
Portugal has not always been the
mall affair that it is today. The lit
tle country once meant a great deal
more than it does at present. To Por
tugal belongs the honor of having been
the leader in fifteenth century explora
tion and discovery. Her great prince,
known as "Henry the Navigator," may
well be called the father of deep sea
navigation. It was owing to his zeal
that the voyages began which were to
end in the circumnavigation of Africa
and the finding of the way to India.
Until well into the sixteenth century
Portugal was rich in colonial posses
sions and was not without great
weight in the diplomacy of Europe,
but by the close of the century her
decline began.
Appreciated at Home.
In Denver are a couple of sisters
Who are trying to make a living as
artists. Their father, who lives in an
other town, is fairly well to do, and
not a month goes by but what the
girls have to write home for money
Willi which to pay expenses. Kecent
ly one of the girls saw a little story in
a magazine and thought it funny. In
It one man asks another how his son
Is getting along In the city. "Very
well Indeed," replied the other. "He's
progressing. Xow he's spending only
10 a week more than he earns."
The girl cut the story out and sent
It to her father. It hadn't been mailed

Main Ppinti In Buddhiam.
Peif conquest and universal charity
are the fundamental thoughts, the very
web and woof, of the religion known
as Buddhism. From the start Bud
dhism arrayed Itself against caste and
against ceremonialism and, proclaim
ing the doctrine of worldwide broth
erhood and the all sufficiency of kind
ness, went forth to procluim the teach
ings of its revered founder. It is to
day the most extensive faith on earth
in point of numbers, and. although
much older than Christianity, is still
full of life and vigor. There are
Buddhist missionaries even in America
and England, and they will tell you
that they have great faith in the futur
of their creed. .New York American.
Hie Easy Task.
In his autobiography Seymour Hicks
tells a good story of Granville Barker's
care in stage managing and the amount
of meaning he wants his actors to
convey without spoken words. "I
want you," said Barker, "to go up the
stage and, opening a book, lean over
the back of that chair and convey by
your expression that you have a broth
er who is a shipowner in Sunderland."
Another story is Comyns Carr's ready
interruption of Herman Merivale, who
was on the verge of insanity. In a
public dining room be knelt down and
began to recite the Lord's Prayer. Any
ordinary check, it was known, might
have made him violent Cnrr slmnlv
said, "Look out, Merivale; the author's
present."
LIFE'S PURPOSES.
Life's purposes are the attainment
of personal perfection and to help
in the who'e life of the world". Men
are given their lives and the possi
bility of dying natural deaths only
on condition that they serve the life
of the whole world, whereas the
suicide, exploits life as long as it is
ain-eeable and refuses to' serve the
life of the world as soon as it be
comes unpleasant, ignoring the
likely fact ihat his service began
only at that moment when his life
became burdensome. Every work
is at first unpleasant Tolstoy.
DAIRY WISDOM.

A separator in the dairy busi

Separator milk contains less
cream than mills skimmed by
hand; hence there is less fat in
it for the calves.
The cleaner the milking and
the sooner tlio milk is Htralned
and cooled the longer it will
keep sweet.
Tlie man who expects to make
dairying piiy cannot afford to
use scrubs or the so called milk

Cows giving milk are vora
cious eaters. It is from their
food and drink that their milk
is made.

Sir Colin Campbell's Commission.
When the Duko of Wellington

sault on a hill fort. The duke saw
a little round man run up a ladder
and, receiving a pike thrust at the
top, roll down like a ball to the bot
ton. Ho was, however, tip nirain in
an instant ami, rtmninir up like a

Getting Down Into the Corners,
"One sure sirn of the sort of
tuff a boy has in him," said the
boss, "is found in the way he wash
es windows. If he not oitly washes
the window clean, but gets down
into corners and washes clean in
other words, if he not only makes a
pood, but a thoroughly good, job
of it why, there you've got a boy
that will bear nursing and that is
bound to amount to something. If
he does one thing thoroughly you
can generally count on his doing
everything that way. I like people
that get down into' the corners."
New York Sun.
THE LAST DEBT.
You must pay at last your own
debt. If you are wise you will
dread a prosperity which only loads
you with more. Benefit is the end
of nature. But for every benefit
which you receive a tax is levied.
He is great who confers the most
benefits. He is base and that is
the one base thing in the universe
to receive favors and render
none. Emerson.
