CLASSIFICATION OF
AMERICAN BARLEYS,
Commonly Known as Two Rowed,
Four Rowed anil Six Rowed.
Barley are commonly classified a
two rowed, four rowed and six rowed.
The nuroH"nn brewers generally pre
fer the two rowed varieties, which nre
plumper and starchier, while In this
couutry the six rowed, of which tbe

atlve, Is generally preferred because,
whlleiless starchy, It Is mure hlslily
albnmlnnus nml therefore possesses
more of the substance which brings
about the Inversion of starch into
augur namely, diastase.
The common American brewing bar
leys arrange themselves lu tho follow
ing system:
I. Blx rowed, erect White Club.
S. Four rowed, drooplnir Manchuria bar
Icy, Oderbruclter. Scotch, Ohio Kail. ISay
UrewlnK, Itloe barley.
8. Two rowed, erect Gohtthorpe, Pri
mus, Fan barley.
t. Two rowed, drooiilng Common Chcv
allor, Horstord's Chevalier, llanna, Prin
cos. BIi Ilowed Barley. Through several
years' experimentation nt tho Wiscon
sin agricultural experiment station It
has been found that the six rowed bar
ley Is preferablo to other varieties and
more prolltnblo for the average farmer
to grow. The yield far surpasses thnt
of the other varieties, and the market
demands for the six rowed class far
Burpnss those of all other varieties com
bined. At a conservative estimate OS
per cent of nil the barley now grown
x Wisconsin is six rowed barley. This
being the type of barley most com
monly used for mailing In tho United
States, it is likely thnt most of the
Bnmples that will bo shown nt the bar
ley aud hop exhibition lu Chicago In
October, 1011. Will be ot that type.
The experiments with two rowed
larlcy through eight years' continuous
breeding work clearly prove that lu
most regions tbe farmer cannot get
tho returns from this crop that enn be
secured with the six rowed variety.
The straw seems to be very frail and
lodges easily, thereby Injuring the
quality ot the grain and reducing the
yield.
