The lawn wa decorated with Japanese lantern strung on wire among the treee and below w re tables and chairs scattered about for the convenience tl the guests. The evening's festivities started with a game of amateur drawing from which the fortune of the artist was read by prophetess. Miss Kdna Morse, which afforded considerable amusement. This was followed by a very lively dance, the Virginia Keel, with a harmonica accompaniment, then, to the sweet strains of music fur nished by several members of the LucVey Orchestra, the guests in dulged in dancing on the green the two-step, waltx and the rustic barn dance. After the dancing several very pleasing solos were rendered by Miss Lorene Wiunek, Mrs. Oliver Adams and Miss Nellie Summers. Refreshments were served after the musical program. A game or two and chorus singing followed, when the guests departed to their respective homes. But as we were from ' Bend, the city council of Prineville ai-! tempted what we consider a '"holdup" , game. If the council knew that the show was to be given there, it knew from the advertising of it that we were an ameteur company and were acting' for charity. See first pane ot Journal ' of Julv 27. The council also knew , play presented by the company here this season as they leave Mon day morning for Bend, Redmond and Madras. From there they go on their annnal tour of Idaho, Utah and Colorado. Mr. McKenzie, the genial man ager, deserves great credit for that Prineville amattura had only a few i carrying a company who know weeks before given "Down in Dixie" i their business, both on and off the and that no license fee had ever been 1 asked f ir in that case. j But what did they do? If the city j marshal is to be believed and he ap-1 pea red to be a gentleman, the council i instructed him to collect a $5 license fee from the Bend company. We did not care about the (5, but the principle in volved. Wh was thia? Just because we were from Bend, wasn't it? Forth- ermore, no demand was made for this money until the curtain was ready to rise.
