Mr. Stcpliouson h:id planned to

they IiikI spent many months to

four years, much of this time in
thu dead of winter, in thu moun

of tho countries while covered
with deep snows. Early last

and without any projection to
stop a body, that if he did go

It is stated also; that because of
the icy coldness of this lake wa
ter a body would probably never
form any gases that would raise
it ta the surface and cause "it to
float.

Noval Housahold Pump,
A novel pumping system for house
hold service has recently been perfect
ed. It comprises it rotary pump driven
by a smnll electric motor. The pump
operates to force water Into nn air
cylinder, the piston of which operates
a switch, stopping the motor when
tho water has reached a certain de
gree of pressure. When the wuter Is
turned on In the faucets tho pres
sure momentarily fall, throwing the
snitch, which starts the pump going
and raises the pressure again to the
predetermined point. With this sys
tem It Is unnecessary to use storago
tanks or reservoirs In the house.

Lamp Law Effective
After August 1st
KfToctlve August 1, the lamp
law for vehicles passed by the
last legislature is now operative,
and all vehicles, buggies and
farm wagons, as well as automo
biles and motor-propelled con
veyances, are required to carry
lamps lighted at night when
traveling upon the public roads
and streets.
Tim sweeping character of the
law Is probably not generally un
derstood. Liltlu attention has
been paid to its provisions ex
cept by the authorities and the
automobile men, and the bill was
usutilly referred to as a measure
regulating lights for automobiles.
As a matter of fact, however, the
automobile is the leant concerned
of all, inasmuch as thoie are very
few motor cars that are not
equipped with lamps of some
sort. It is upon the farmers of
the stale that most of the ex
peuie will full. This is what the
law suys in defining tho vehicles
to which it applies:
"Kvery moving thing except;
railroad and streetcars upon the!
streets, roads and highways of j
this Mate moved by power shall ;
be a vehicle under the terms of
this act."
Kvery kind of power, including
horse power, is involved, as may
be confirmed by other provisions
of tho act. In fixing the require
ments as to lights at night, the
new law reads:
"Every motor vehicle shull be
provided with adequate brakes
sufficient to control the vehicle
ut all times and a suitable and
adequate bell, horn, whistle or
signalling device, and shall, dur
ing tho period from one hour af
ter sunset to one hour before
sunrise, display at least two
white lights in lamps on the
front and one red light in the
rear of such vehicle. Said rear
lamp shall show a white light
across the rear of the vehicle.
The white rays of such rear lamp
shall shine upon the number
plate carried on the rear of such
vehicle The light of the front
lamps shall be visible at least
two hundred feet in the direction
i'u which the vehicle is proceed
ing; provided, that motor bicy
cles or motorcycles and all other
vehicles other than motor cars
shall be required to display but
ono lighted lamp, such lamp to
be placed on the front of the ve
hicle so that it shull be visible
one hundred feet in the direction
in which the vehicle is proceed
ing, and show red lights to the
rear. There shall be displayed
on tho face of tho lumps showing
white lights the registration
number in figures not less than
ono inch in height, and placed
thereon in such manner so that
when the lamp is lighted the
number may be read at a dis
tance of at least fifty feet by a
person possessing proper eye
sight." North Beach
