    Making Good Time
on Steel Bridge
Rapid lieaiiwray is being made
on the missive steel brulne across
the Ciookod river, on the line of
the Oregon Trunk, nd if the com
pany has good luck in the delivery
of materials, the new road into the
interior will be completed and un
der operation to Bend before the
end of August. Heud is to be the
southern terminus of the line, al
though surveys have been run
southward to a connection with
the Pacific it Eastern, now in op
eration from Medford to Butte
Falls.
The new Crooked River Bridge
will be the seventh highest struc
ture of its kindjin the world, and
one of the finest and most ex
pensive type of cantilever con
struction in railroad building in
America. ine one lolty span
which bridges the picturesque
gorge of the Crooked river at a
point about five miles south of
Opal City, to which trains are now
running, is to be 340 feet in length
from rimrock to rimrock on either
brink cf the chasm through which
flows the roaring stream at a
depth of 360 feet below the top of
the canyon.
The massive steel trusses are be
ing projected outward from either
side, and are anchored in solid
rock to a depth of about 50 feet
below the.bridge level.
The slow progress heretofore on
this feature ofthe work has been
due to the slow delivery of steel
from the East, The line was

south approach on to Bend, so
that as soon as the bridge has
been completed it will be but a
matter of a few days to string and
fasten the rails for the balance of
the uncompleted section of the
road.
While the bridge is being built
exclusively by the Oregon Trunk,
it will be used jointly by that line
and the Deschutes Railroad, the
Harriman line into the interior
now building to Redmond. Telegram.
