    S3:
Central Oregon
Filling Up.
Wonderful changes as com
pared with the condition of Cen
tral Oregon a year ago were
noted by Louis Y. Hill, presi
dent of the Great Northern Kail
way, on his tour of the Interior
of the state, from which he re
turned yesterday morning.
Future transportation even
more remarkable is predicted by
Mr. Hill, as well as by Carl K.
Gray, president of the North
Bank road; Geo. B. Harris,
chairman of the board of direc
tors of the Burlington system,
and others who accompanied hini
on his recent trip. Mr. Ii'ul vis
ited Bend, Prineville, Burns,
and other interior points on the
anniversary of his last journey
through the same district.
"I was not so much surprised
at the changes we saw in the
towns and new settlements that
have sprung up as the result of
building the railroad," he said
yesterday, "but I was almost
startled to see the great differ
ence in the rural districts.
Last year the only place
where we saw homesteaders at
work was at Fort Rock. This
year we saw them everywhere.
We learned that many others
have filed but not yet started to
baild their homes.
A big start was made this
year in settling the remote
portions of Central Oregon. Now
we will have to keep it up. Or
egon will have to continue its
publicity campaign to attract
settlers. In this work the Port
land Commercial Club has been
well in the forefront. Wherever
we went we found eager inqui
ries for C. C. Chapman, manager
of the publicity work of the
Portland club. They appreciate
the work that Mr. Chapman and
the Portland commercial inter
ests have done.
"The most crying need of the
interior, however, is people.
Every town and city is planning
to bring in additional settlers.
At several places we met with
the commercial clubs and dis
cussed with them the plan they
have in preparation to have the
land taken up."
crops in central Oregon are
looking splendid, reported Mr.
Hill. The season is two weeks
later this year than in 1910
Last year the season was two
weeks "m advance of normal.
This year it is normal.
In the five days that the party
was away from Portland the
members traveled more than 500
miles by automobile. This gave
Mr. Hill an opportunity of study
tog the road situation, tie is a
motor enthusiast and carries his
own machine with bim. Central
Oregon, he declared, had better
roads than those parts of the
state having railroads.
Tonnage of agricultural pro
ducts from the interior will be
much greater this year than last
he predicts. He saw thousands
of acres of wheat and alfalfa that
were barren last year.
Construction of independent
logging roads from the timbered
areas to connect with the Oregon
Trunk will be uneertaken in the
next few yaars. The Hill inter
ests, however, do not content'
piate tanner development in
mid -state very soon. They ure
looKing toward t'nueville as a
possible terminus for a branch
but have not promised that line
for any definite time.
"The people of Prlneville have
been very patient with us for a
long time," declared Mr. Hill.
"We won't promise them a road
until we are actually ready to
build it. Then we shall build as
soon as we promise.
"There is considerable terri
tory in Central Oregon now that
might justify the construction of
new railroads, but it is another
thing to get the money to build
it with."
"My trip to Centaal Oregon,"
ne said last nignt, "taught me
that it is no place for a trlller or
an adventurer. That country
needs a lot of hard workers and
intelligent methods. Success a
waits them."
Further railroad constuction
in Central Oregon may depend
largely upon the patronage given
those lines recently completed
and now being built, according
to the statements of Julius
Kruttschnitt, vice-president and
director of maintenance and op
eration of the Hard man system
"Our work of the last fow
years represents a largo invest- j
ment." said Mr. Kruttschnitt,!
"and I think we should sec first '
what tho country does in the:
way of response before planning!
anything further. j
"Central Oregon looks fine and
it is pleasing to observe that the
land is rapidly being taken up.
A good deal of it has been bro
ken and the country is building
up rapidly.
"We have a fine road into Cen
tral Oregon and are now open as
far as Madras. We arj aecom-j
modating some traffic already, j
A circus train was tho first big'
piece of business that we han
dled into Madras.
"At present we are prepared
to go to Bend, but nothing has
been done toward extending the
line beyond that point."
That, in addition to carrying
out the improvements already
under way or provided for, the
Uarrimau system contemplates
no immediate activity, is the in
ference feft by Mr. Kruttschnitt.
Although the route from Bend
to Odell, on the Natron Klamath
cutoff of the Southern Pacific,
has been surveyed and although
Robert S. Lovett, president of
the system, when in Portland
last August, annouueed the ex-tension-of
the Deschutes line to
Odell, it is not likely that it will
be built soon, When Judge Lov
ett was here the Deschutes road
was projected only to Redmond
and he contemplated the con
struction of a Southern Pacifiic
connection from that point.
Sinte then arrangements have
been made to extend the service
to Bend and Portland officials
have expressed themselves in
favor of joining the Deschutes
line with a liuk from Bend to
Odell, a distance of 55 miles.
Until the Natron Klamath pro
ject is finished it is not expected
that the Bend -Odeil link will be
constructed, as, excepting to
serve local traffic, there would be
little advantage in having it.
Construction of an east and
west line across Oregon, which
has been spoken of repeatedly
by various railroad officials is not
included in any plans now under
consideration, declared Mr.
Kruttschnitt. Oregoniun.
Bully for Bill.
Bill Crown, the big rich stock
man of Crook county, is buying up
all the yearlings he can gather up
at 11.50 per head. Old Bill knows
