Raise Hogs.
Aoknowleo'frempnt of the re.
cript of Ihe booklet bog-raisin
issued recently by the traffic
department of the Harriman lines
in Oregon, lias been made by
fanners and stoekgrowers in
various parts of the Northwest,
many of them expressing their
intentions to take the advice
contained therein and embark
in the business cf swir.e breed
ing for profit.
It is the intent of It. B. Milter,
traffic manager of the Harriman
lines, of D. O. Lively, manager
of the Portland Union Stockyards,
and of others in Portland to make
hograising one of the loading in
dustries of the Northwest, in the
hope of removing the necessity
of importing live hogs from the
Middle Western Slates for
slaughter at local packing plants.
Publication of this booklet is
but the beginning of a conserted
movement to encourage farmers
to take up swinuraising. The
profits to be derived from it have
been pointed out in various ways
both by theoretical analysis and
by practical demonstration.
The new booklet is intended
for the experienced stockgrowers
and for the novice. It is filled
with common sense advice ex
pressed in a style that can be
understood by anyone of ordi
nary intelligence. It contained
both the practical information
and the expert advice written
in a readable way.
P.ndl.ton Farmer Plaasad.
'It's a farmer book in farmers
lingo," declared a correspondent
in expressing his thanks for a
copy.
Even the women are interested.
. Lillian Moore, of Trochet, Wash.,
, wrote to Mr. Miller yesterday,
saying: '-It is surely a great ben
efit to those interested in the
raising of hogs."
Dr. James Whitcombe, di
rector of the Oregon experiment
station and instructor in swine
huspandry at the State Agricul
ture College, writes: "This pub
lication should be of much value
to the Northwest and instill
great interest in hog production."
S.' M. Stone, of Hood River,
says he is much indebted to the
authors of the booklet. "It looks
good,'he says, "and I intend
starting in the business right
away."
C. H. Ede. cashier of a bank at
Winona, Wash., requests that
two or three dozen copies be sent
him for distrubution among the
farmers of the community.
Walla Wa.la Extolls It.
S. M. Br6wn, publicity manager
of the Walla Walla Commercial
Club, declares it to be the most
helpful piece of literature that
has been issued in connection
with the extensive advertising
campaigns conducted by the
communities of the Northwest.
"This seems to me to be the
most practical publication 1 have
ever seen on any industrial pur
suit,"writes H. P. Jones sec
retary of the North Yakima Com
mercial Club.
Scott Henderson, secretary of
the Kennewick, Wash., Com
mercial Club, says the farmers
of his community are deeply in
terested in the subject and pre
dicts that many of them will en
gage in "this nelected industry."
D. M. Finch, superentendent
of the Camas Prairie Railroad,
advises that it is so good that he
wants to go into the hograising
business.
"With a little capital and this
book," he declares, "I cojald get
rich."
Already 15,000 copies of the
pamphlet have been distriputed
to farmers on the 0. W. R. & N.
lines and to inquires in various
parts of the country.
The first issue consisted of
25,000 copies and the remaining
10,000 copies will be sent to per
sons whose names are being ob
tained by railroad agents, news
papers, farmers' unions and Com
mercial Clubs in various parts of
the Northwest. Oregonian,
