An amusing practical joke play
ed on tho gneala of a certain tea
party ia decrild by a painter of
still life. Ho says: "Once a patron
brought me six saucers and a card
upon which wa pinned a limine
centipede, or 'thousand legs,' re
questing me to copy it exactly upon
each of the saucer no that the base
of tho cup would cover it. I did
o. Afterward he told mo that he
had given a littlo tea partv and
without tho knowledge of hi wife
bad tubatitattcd tho painted saucers
for tho plain one. Ilia amusement
consisted in observing the horrified
expression on tho face of tho
guests when they raised their cupi
und the quickness with which they
put them down again to keep the
monster imprisoned. It was only
when tho hostess noticed that none
of tho guests drank their ten that
tho deception was discovered."

The mileage of tho blood circula

It bus been calculated, for instance,
that, assuming tho heart to beat
sixty-nine times a nilnuto at ordi

tho ruto of 207 yards in a mlnuto,
or nine miles an hour, 220 miles a
day nnd 80,000 miles a year. If a

In the early part of the last cen
tury Sam I'atch wa quite a promi
nent figure. Hi autodialling ex
bibitioiia at leaping made his name
lamoii from one end of tho coun
try to the other, and in thoso day
tho expression "A cnuy a Ham
Patch" or "You act "like Sum
Patch" was very common. Ham
Patch in thoso day wa a sort of
symbol or synonym of recklcMiu
or daredeviltry.
Sam Patch was born in Rhode Is
land, went to sea in early lifo and
afterward settled in Paterson, N.
J., whero ha wa a cotton spinner.
Itecuiise of hi threat to jump from
a bridge over the Paxaic river ho
wa finally placed under arrest. A
few month afterward tho succcss
ful performance of tho feat gavo
him such widespread notoriety that
he traveled alMint, leaping from the
yardurms or topmasts of ship.
Hum died young, but during his
comparatively short life he gained
great distinction of a certain kind.
This high jumping idivncray
amounted to a omnia with Sam, and
a hi fi'iita were accomplished be
fore tho duv of prizellghters, foot
racer or balloonist ho was regard
ed a a murveloiis athlete.
After his Passaic river jump hi
next most famou jump wa at Ni
agara fall from a slanting rock
midway between the highest point
on float island and the water, and
ho achieved thi successfully. Aft
er few morn leap of less height
ho announced that on a certain date
ho would jump from the bank of
tho (lenesee river at Rochester, N.
Y., into the water below the falls,
a ditttauce of US feet.
A great crowd guthered to w li
nes tho performance: Sum made
tho jump on Nov. 1.1, 18.'!), but it
was hi last. On this occasion he
warned to lose control of himself,
doubled up and struck tho water
broadside. It is proliablo tho im
pact killed him, though some said
that in trying to swim ashore un
der the cataract ho became entan
gled in the root of a large tree. and
wa drowned.
There i. however, no contempo
raneous evidence that ho was seen
alive after striking the water. His
body was fmmd after several
month near tho mouth of tho
(icm-soe river and was buried there.

A little girl sat in a doctor' of

mother' turn came to go to the
dentist' chair. The room wa! filled
with patients, for it was the com

Every ono sat and watched the
child', who smiled at each in turn,
beginning at the right and going
around in a circle. She received
ome pleasant responses ut first, but
finally they grew scarce. Nothing
daunted, she kept right on making
grimacio until her motlyr in exas

"Julia, what are you doing?"
"Don't I have to, mother?" And
tho little maid pointed to a sign
