Everywhere they observed
progress. Tho people of the
various small towns have awak
ened to the necessities occasioned
by the prefence of the railroad
and are rising to meet the chang
ing conditions. At Metclius the
commercial intereslshave caused
an artesian well to be driven
with tho result that water was
encountered at a depth of less
than TOO feet. A handsome new
hotel also is being erected there,
which will rccom module all the
travel that is expected there
within the next few years.
Colonists are coming into the
country in great numbers. It is
estimated that the opportunity
seekers who arrive there num
ber more than 100 daily. Near
ly all remain. Most of them
have money and invest it rn
small tracts of land. The var
ious towns are well prepared to j
accommodate the new arrivals
having committees who meet the
trains and gtage lines and who
advise the settlers on oppor
tunities for profitable iuvest
ments. At Bend a Ladies' Auxiliary to
the Commercial Club has been
organized for the purpose of
holding weekly meeting to wel
come the families of new citizens
justness at the land offices is
booming. The number of tilings
on homestead land at Bend since
the first of the year has been
Dearly 100. All property close
to the town has been taken up
and most new arrivals are seek
ing locations as far as 50 miles
from town.
-I never was more surprised in
life," said Mr Jackson, and Mr.
Foster joined with him in voicing
this sentiment. "The entire
country presents excellent op
portunities for agricultural
and horticultural development.
Nothing that has been said of
that region has overestimated it.
I'll be able to go back to St. Paul
now and tell them that the liter
ature that has been sent out on
this subject has not even done
it justice."
Tillman Reuter's success on
his 35 acre farm near Madras
has been phenomenal. Without
irrigation he has been ab!e to
raise crops'that have taken first
prizes at nearly all the agricul
tural competitions h 'd in the
Northwest in the past Tow years
He accompanied the party to
Portland, this being the first
trip he ever made from his
present home to th'n city on a
railroad train. Orconian.
An Cld Maij's Idea.
"Do you." he asked, "believe in early
marriages?
"Well." she replied. "I used to, but
am willing to say r.iat at present I
believe better late t iau uever' may

some other things."-Chicago Kecord-

Women are today playing a promi

by the pastor's wife, they bravely set
to work with paint pots and brushes
