    Homeseekers
Coming In.
Central Oregon does not
know how it is ping to care for
the people who will begin jnur
hip into that section in solid
stream beginning tomorrow
morning and continuing until
about April 13.' when the low
rate colonist ticket sale ends.
The territory is plenty big
to accommodate everyonecoming
here from the East, and event
ually all who enter at this time
will find comfortable homes and
profitable occupation there. But
the need of immediate accom
modations is the prob'em con
fronting the people of Madras.
Metolius, Redmond. Bend.
Prineville and other points from
which the homeseekers will rad
lite after reaching the far
famed productive state.
Information was received at
Madras yesterday that 250 per
sons, all destined for that place,
had left St. Paul on the first ex
tra train run out of that city in
connection with the reduced
fares Friday evening. How to
house and feed these new ar
rivals is the difficulty that the
enterprising residents of Madras
expect to overcome between this
and the time the Oregon Trunk
brings thera into the rapid grow
ing city. An order for tents and
other 'equipment was received
in Fortland yesterday. These
will be rushed to Madras at once.
The new hottl at Metolius is
rapidly nearing completion, but
will not be ready for occupancy
untii the colonist season is well
under way. The accommcdaticn
at Madras is better now than at
Metolius, and it is likely that a
majority of the arrivals will stop
at thu former place until they
caa reach that part of Central
Oregon which they have selected
as their future homes.
Although Bend, Redmond and
Prineville each expect to receive
a great influx of Eastern land
seekers, the situation at those'
places does not demand such
urgent attention as at the towns
on the Oregon Trunk over which
nearly all travel will arrive.
To handle the traffic properly a
new stage schedule has been es
laoiisnea out 01 Madras ana is
arranged to connect with the
Oregon Trunk trains. Although
the railroad is uot interested in
the stage business, the tarff of
rates has bean published by the
passenger department for the
guidance of settlers. Auto
mobile stages will leave Madras
at 8 A. M. and at 9:30 P. M
daily, the fares to towns off the
railroads being as follows: Culver
Junction, 2; Eillman, 14.50;
Prineville, $5; Redmond, $6;
Laidlaw, f; Bend, fS. Horse
mages win leave at the same
time, but as the travel is slower
the fares, which are as follows,
are lower: Hillman, 2; Prineville,
f'2.50; Redmond, 13.50; Laidlaw,
fi'T- T 3 - FT.I
jjerm, to. inese rates are
not guaranteed, 1 ut are a re
liable indication of what the new
comers may expect to pay.
While the roads are in good con
dition they will continue in effect
but should the weather necessi
tate additional equipment or
cause delays in travel slight
increase may be announced.
All reports from the East in
dicate that the bulk of tourists
are determined to go to Central
Oregon. The ad vice of the rail
roads and of the various com
mhnity publicity bureaus seems
to have been adopted, as full 90
per cent of travelers express the
intention of locating on farms.
While many coaches are filled
with men traveling a'one with
nothing but their personal
baggage, many others are bring
ing their families. They have
disposed of their Eastern homes,
severed all connections and are
determined to seek new locations
in Oregon. Some are bringing
their household goods, farm
machinery and livestock. Ac
cording to the od vices of pas
senger agents wi.o have confer
red with the West-bound army.
many men are coming alone for
the purpose of selecting a place
that is suiiable for a home with
the intention of sending for their
families after they become set
lied.
The residents of Central Ore
gon are eager for the arrival of
the first train bringing home
seekers. They purpose to help
them and have sent out assur
anees Unit they are well able to
care for all. They realize that
leoplo is what they need more
than anything else, and promise
to o(To;' induce men's that will
satisfy the tourists. Oregiuiian.
