Continued from first page.
is building on the west bank. At a
point 71 miles south of the Col- j
unibia the Hill system crosses to!
the east title and for ten miles both ;
lines will operate over a joint set '
ot rails.
At the Sl-mile post the two lines
branch out again and ruu over
separate tracks to Culver Junction, !
130 miles south of the Columbia.
From Culver Junction to Red
mond the grading has been com
pleted and track-laying depends
upon the time the bridge across
the Crooked Kivcr is finished. This
structure will be put tip by the
Hill interests and will be of a
single arch, 320 feet in length and
300 feet above the bed of the
stream. Both systems will operate
their trains across it.
Construction trains alone are
now operating from the O.-W. R.
Jfc N. Co. line to Willow Creek, but
aa soon is the road is completed to
Redmond a regular freight and
passenger service will be placed in
effect. It is yet too early to de
termine the time when Redmond
will be reached, but Tortland Har
riman officials are confident that
they will be able to operate into
that city early in the summer.
This will complete the Central
Oregon project of the Harriman
system aa at present outlined, but
it is believed that in view of the
heavy appropriations voted by the
Union Pacific directors at New
York last week this is only the be
ginning. Redmond, it is expected, will be
the center for extensive develop
ments by the system that will
reach all parts of the state that
are now without and in need of
railroad connections. The line
from Redmond to Odell on the
Xatron-Klamath cut-off of the
Southern Pacific has been pro
jected and is included in the list of
improvements authorized by the
Eastern men last week. That this
will be built within the next few
years is the belief of local railroad
men.
According to plans already out
lined in the executive oflice of the
company the proposed line from
Vale, in the eastern part of the
state, to the Southern Pacific, also
is expected to connect with Red
mond. All the work done tb.ua.fur has
been done under the direction of
the company itself. Even the
bridges that have been built so far
have been put up by Harriman
engineers. ine plans lor the
Trout Creek viaduct also provide
for company work. The Wiliiams
Creek span may be given out un
der contract. Oregonian.

but was resumed and will be
pushed ahead at the rate of two
miles a day until the first ob
struction is reached, which is the
Trail Crossing bridge. This will
delay the progress of the road not
longer than two months, when the
work will be carried on to iiend.
The crowd that witnessed the
ceremonies came from all parts of
the country. Prineville was well
represented. Iiend Bent its band,
large delegations came from Red
mond, Culver Junction, and other
parts of the country.
The crowd waB fed by a barbecue
in which two beevs were conumed.
This part of the affair was well
managed by J. Y. Howard, who
has furnished meat for the con
struction of the road. Long tables
were spread in the open air, and
all were cared for.

Return Home Through the Sunny South.
When you arrange your eaxtern trip
be sure to include the Sunset Kottte
through New Orleans, Kl I'aso, Los
Angeles and San Francisco for return.
It is a splendid educational journey,
and at this time of the year especially
delightful because so warm and comfort
able. Every mile is through the sunny
southland the rice and cotton fields of
Louisiana and Texas, the vast mirage
meses of New Mexico and Arizona, now
spread with bright green, the orange
groves and semi-tropic charm of Cali
fornia, miles and miles along the ocean
shore, and several of the most inter
esting cities on the continent. Ask
your local railroad agent all about it. f-3
