Boost for Good Roads!
Tho Good Road movement In
Oregon has become general. All
classes are represented In tho
demand upon the legislature for
tho passago of the five Oregon
Good Roads Association highway
bills that have been pending
before it. Farmers are the most
interested becuuso they have
most to gain. The Oregon
farmer is, and . has been a
prisoner on his farm during the
winter months because the ter
ribly muddy rouds that miro an
empty wagon keep him from tho
market pluco and from tho pleas
ures of town. Tho steots of
Portland, tho largest Oregon
town, are trod day by day by
boys from tho farm who would
not stay-in the mud and who
have not learned tho clerical work
of town.
Thousands of acros of land are
not producing wealth for pros
perous communities because
they cannot be reached over bad
roads. In many Instances thore
are no roads at all.
More than two millions of acres
of land worth now more than $50,
000,000 were given in Oregon for
the making of roads. These
roads were never built. The
holders of land grauts were not
hold "accountable to their trust.
Thors was no system.
Tho state wide good roads
movement now insists upon sys
tem. Every county is encour
aged to build its own system of
roads. The highway bills pro
vide state aid. This aid, $20,000
to each county In two years that
riuses $10,000 Is little enough
compared to tho lU.COO.OOO ap
propriation for state aided high
ways In New York, or $2,K&9,000
in Now Jersey, which Is only
fraction of the slzo of ao tvsrago
Oregon county.
The operation of the highway
bills as luw, tho services of the
highway board and commissioner
tho appropriation generally of
$(180,000 to help counties build
roaus, tho convict labor bills,
ihit Ink-is cmiv.cls from compe
tition with free labor and putt
thoiii at work crushing rock, the
county bonding act which per
mits counties to pledge their
credit for the construction of
permanent roads all of thess
uiovemonls united In a general
system to establish a good roads
systom in every Oregon county
in expected to couvmco an
doubters of the development
necessity and benefit of per
manent highway construction so
that when tho question of in
creased appropriation comes be
foro the higUluture two years
from now. tho largest possible
amount will seem little enough.
Oregon's most progressive
citizens laugh at tho idea - of
thero being political motives be
hind tho good road movement.
The good road movement results
from good rood necessity. It Is
bigger than politics that has been
ikened to mudholcs; it is bigger
than any man' or set of men.
Tho movement Is the develop
ment history of Oregon In the
making, and calls for the ser
vices of broad minded, fore
sighted men. These are the
men who aro supporting th?
good roud movemant. They
have arisen In every Oregon
county. They havo told their
legislature that good wagon
roads are even more Important
than railroads, and thut railroads
are of littlo avail, unless wagon
roads are built, solidly, smoothly,
to serve as transportation con
nection " between tho farm or
center of production and the rail
roads, or, if not the railroads,
tho market pluco, tho center of
sales. Lacking easy transporta
t oi, ttie focd tho people cat on
their tables, tho furniture with
which they furnish their homes,
the Implements they use, all cost
more, and the added cost all goes
into Oregon's annual $2,000,000
bud roads fund, a fund which
pays no interest and never re
turns the principal.
Another Railroad For Prineville?
Aloxandor Hamilton, of Prine
ville, and associates have plans
perfected whereby Prinoville Is
to have another railroad, equip
ped with all steel gasoline cars,
in operation by July 4, lull. Mr.
Hamilton, who was at Lamonla
yestorduy, telephoned the stoty
over at length, to tho effect that
tho survey had started and a fine
route and feasible grade had
been found from Lamonta south
over tho pass, and tho first five
miles north of Lamonta and two
miles south is found to be so fa
vorable that construction will not
exceed $500 per mila. As soon
as from two to five miles can be
permanently located teams will
bo put ou tho work of grading,
and later moro will be added and
the work rushed to completion
by June 30.
Orders for cars have been
placed, and they will probably
bo seen in Prinoville by July 4
of this year. There is plenty of
money behind tho project, accor
ding to Mr. Hamilton's story,
securities amounting to $3,500,
000 having boea recently sold In
New York City by the financial
agent of the new company, which
is as yet without a name, to take
care of every feature of the -project,
and construction will soon
be begun on tho new road from
Prineville via Lamonta, to con
nect with the Oregon Trunk
Line.
Mr. Hamilton fulled to state
where the terminus of the now
road would be, so it Is logically
concluded to be Metolius, thus
making the stub line about 27
miles in length.
When this valuable little piece
of proporty shall have been com
pleted and equipped, said Mr.
Hamilton, the management will
open negotiations with officers of
the Oregon Trunk to operate it.
