Dry Farm Exhibit Sent to Portland Secretary Cillncr. of the Port land Chamber of Commerce, has rocelved and installed the Crook county dry-fnrtu exhibit which took first priza at the National Dry-Farming Congress held at Snokano. This exhibit is the property of Tillman Keuter and came to the Chamber through the agency of the 0. R. & N. It is now installed among the Chamber of Commerce exhibits on Fifth street and constitutes one of the most impressive agri cultural presentations ever made from a semi arid country, says the Telegram. Mr. Iveuter produced the grains and grasses displayed near Madras, which which is on a plateau on the brink of the Deschutes river. No irrigation whatever was employed. Dry farming methods of cultivation were not so detailed and exhaus tive as some of the experiment stations maintain, but more of what would likely be done by the average farmer. This splendid crop grew in a dry season for Eastern Oregon, when ordinarily the yield of cereals was light be cause of the shortage of rain. And yet with the unfavorable conditions to contend with, the results have been beautiful. Several varieties of corn are shown in the list of agricultural products with which Mr. Keuter experimented. Among these are white pearl, Wisconsin yel low dent. Queen of Nishna, yel low flint, medium early sweet and Wisconsin silver kiDg. There is alfalfa three and a half feet high. One bunch .of vetch is over three feet high and extra orninarily luxuriant. Several varieties of oats, barley and wheat aret exhibited, the stalks of which as a rule are three feet high and in all the heads are ex ceptionally large and the grain well filled. Full particulars as to the con ditions under whch the admir able crop was grown will be pro cured, and the data exhibited with the product of the plateau "soil. This is the best material evidence yet procured locally of what the great Eastern and Cen tral"Oregon region will do under proper dry-farming methods. As both the Hill and Harriman systems, and the state and fed eral agricultural experts are do ing all in their power to teach dry-farming principles, assur ance'is given that the time is near when millions of bushels of grain and hundreds of cars of livestock will be brought annu ally out of the country which has remained unknown for a genera tion.
