tion at tbe bands of those interested
A program i being arranged that
will give the events and tbe
amount of tbe prizes that will be
awarded for different school sport,
which will include every spoit
known to the boys and girls.
This matter has been left to
Prof. Coe and E. E. Evans, both of
the High School faculty, who will
have charge of the arrangements.
The program for the forenoon on
Friday at the fair will be backed
up by the fair management in all
that they do in the way of sports
and award of prizes.
It is the plan of the fair manage
ment to make this one of tbe big
events in the future if the response
on the part of tbe outside schools
is what it should be.
Another matter which is causing
great interest and excitement in
the Crook County High School is
the definite announcement by tbe
board that there will be at least
two basket boll games at the fair
grounds on Saturday forenoon.
These games will be played in the
open air in front of the grandetand
on a court that will be rolled and
prepared especially for the purpose.
There will be- a game eacb
between the boys of the opposing
literary societies of the Crook
County school and the girls of the
different societies, besides which
there is a move to get teams from
Bend and the Warmspring Indians
can no doubt be induced to be
present with at least one team.
The definite announcement of the
two last mentioned teams will be
made as soon as the board bears
from them.
The board has announced that
no school children, no matter bow
email or how large, will be admitted
on school day without a tag from
their teacher, showing where they
are attending school, and giving
the name of the teacher and the
pupil. These tags must not be
transferred, and if you loose your
tag, you will have to pay for your
ticket at the gate.
All teachers should attend to
this and provide tags for all who
wish to attend.
Tbo matter of prizes for the five
foot races which were mentioned
last week, was considered by the
fair board Monday.
. The offer of local runners was
accepted and prizes totaling 1175

were hung np for the winners, with
a statement from the board that
they would have offered more had
the funds been available.
The conditions governing these
races are substantially as follows'
Each contestant must be a resident
of Central Oregon, and there must
be five to enter and three to start.
The entries will be closed the even
ing before tbe race. The dates on
which these races will be run will
be announced later, but it will be
on one of the regular dates of the
fair from October 18 to 22, in
clusive. The arrangements for the base
ball games for which there have
been offered purses aggregating
$350 besides a silver cup. are well
under way and several good games
are promised.

Crook County
The ''Pacific Northwest," a magazine
published at Portland, has formulated
a plan for advertising tbe state by Bend
ing a delegation of young ladies, one
from each county, who will travel in a
private car through the Mississippi Val
ley, and California, and .scatter literature
pertaining to their own counties. It ie
intended to spend a day in each of the
important cities, where the locality
warrants special tours will be made in
automobiles.
It is planned to have the party leave
Portland early in February and travel
east over the northern routes, thence
down the "Father of Waters" to arrive
at New Orleans for the Slardi Gras Fes
tival on March 3rd. The return will be
over the "Sunset Itoute" through Cali
fornia to San Francisco, east to (jreat
Salt Lake, and back to Portland over
the "Short Line" about the middle of
March. The tour will cover a period of
five weeks and all the principal cities
between the Rocky Mountains and the
Mississippi river will lie visited. The
expense of the trip will be defrayed
from subscriptions to the magazine and
eacb of the participants will be ex
pected to secure 300 mbscribers be
tween now and the first of February.
Miss Beulah Hyde will represent Crook
county, and will carry literature com
piled by the several commercial organi
zations in the county.
This is one of the best advertising
methods that could be adopted, as each
of the ladies will be expected to
thoroughly inform herself on the needs
of the county (be represents that she
may be able to reply intelligently to
any question asked. The citizens of
the county should lend their assistance
to Miss Hyde in her effort to secure the
required number of subscriptions. The
subscription price is $1 for three years.
