    CONTRACT LET
FOR BRIDGE
Oregon Trunk Line will
Cross at Celilo.
BRIDGE WILL COST MILLION
Contract for the First Two
C rollings of Deschutes
Also Let
Contract fur Ilia stal construe
lion of tlx Oregon Trunk Railway
nriiluo at tlx crowing of tlie
Columbia river at Celilo hat been
let to the Pennsylvania Steel Com-
ny. The slwl for the structure
will weigh 4'Q0 tons or 0,0X1,000
found.
Work on the foundations for the
)iers has been undur way for some
time umlcr a contract let to Porter
l!ros., and it it expected that the
concrete work will be completed by
March 1. The placing of the steel
is to begin on that date, if possible,
hut it Is believed that the bridge
cannot he thrown open to railroad
traffic before January 1, 1012.
Porter Pros., have completed
the excavation for ten of the piers
and haAe filled the excavations
with concrete.
This 11,000,000 bridge, which
will give the Oregon Trunk Rail
way pliykil connection with the
North Hand or Spokane, Portland
& Seattle Railroad, will in some
rcKpects be the most remarkable
structure in the country. The
peculiarity of the bridge lie in the
fnct that the great river will be
crossed with the foundations of
evrey pier out of water during the
ordinary stages of the river'
Fitrt Rnt a Itckf libit.
One mile west of Celilo, where
the bridge site has been selected,
the mighty waters of the Columbia
are divided into several small and
deep channel and run turbulently
among walls of solid rock. Several
channels will be crossed by trurs
spans of steel, six of which will be
2.10 feet long. The seventh and
longest f pan will be but 320 feet in
length. In addition the Govern
ment canal under construction at
Celilo will be spanned and over
this a draw 250 feet long will be
swung. The piers are all to be
constructed on the rock islands
that divide the river into its numer
ous channels at that, point. In
addition to the truss spans the
construction of a long steel viaduct
will be necersary and for that pur
pose 17 100 foot plate-girder spans
and 5 75-foot plate-girder spans
will be put in plaoe, resting on as
umny concrete piers.
For nearly 12 months before the
completion of the Celilo bridge it
is probable that the Oregon Trunk
will be operating train into
Central Oregon up the Deschutes
Canyon. During 1911 a terry
transfer will be in operation about
four miles up the river from the
bridge site, where the Columbia
has ft wide and comparatively
smooth channel. This forry will
he put la operation this week for
the purpose of transporting rails,
ties and bridge steel across the
river from a station established on
the north bank of the Columbia.
Ftirjr Carritl Matarial.
Two long inclines or trestles, one
on each side of the Columbia, have
been constructed on 5 per cent
grades. Rails have been laid on
these incline and big scows cor
strucled that will carry loaded can.
Tho cars will he transferred to the
scows from the North Rank road,
carried across the river, run up
the incline on the south bank and
thence hauled to the points along
the line where the material carried
by tho cars is needed. A track
laying machine is on hand, and,
when once started, tracklaying will
proceed with short interruptions
at only two or three bridges until
the tunnel on the 12 miles of joint
railroad nt the Smith ranch is
reached. It is probable that a
longer tie-up will be caused there
and it is now admitted that work
on the tunnel will have to proceed
with unusual rapidity for the rail
road to be able to get Us rails laid
to MadraB by January 1, 1911.
The contract for tho steel at the
first two crossings of the Deschutes
river, which are at the Ox Bow
near Sherar's wagon bridge, have
been let also to the Pennsylvania
Steel Company and this material
will be delivered, Ills exctcd so
soon that there will be no dulavs
at the two e rot Mugs other than
those occasioned by putting the
steel in place Oiegoninn.

Mad a Runaway.
County road viewers, J. W. El
liott and II. (irimee, and County
Surveyor Rice, were in a danger
ous run-away accident at 1'owell
Butte Friday. The team was be
ing watered at an irrigating ditch
when they became frightened and
started to run. Mr. Crimes was in
front of the team, and had the
bridles off of both horses when
they started, and in his attempt to
stop them, was knocked down, and
tire wheels of the wagou passed
over both legs. Fortunately no
bones were broken, and Mr. Grinu-s
teceived no other injuries than se
ver bruises. Mr. Rice had stepped
out of the wagon a moment before
the team started, but Mr. Elliott
sat on the seat.
After the team had ran some
distance Mr. Elliott jumped from
the wngon.and the force of the fall
threw him onto bis head and bis
face and forehead were badly
bruised and cut. The trio started
again Tueeday to view out other
roads.
