Railroad Laborers
Causing Trouble
Sheriff Elkins hag been having
a busy time with the laborers on
the railroad construction work in
the Ilillman-Bend district this
week.
War broke out about 3 o'clock
- Sunday afternoon when a bunch of
laborers attacked P. E. Morrow,
who has been conducting a drink
''joint" in Hillman. The cause of
the trouble has not been given out j.
by the laborers or the man as
sulttd, but after a free-for-all scrap
in the building, Morrow broke
through the back door and started
for the poe (office some three blocks
distant.
Before half the distance was
covered, Morrow turned on the
foreigners who were following him
closely and showed fight when one
ihem knocked him down with a
rock, the blow bursting the left eye
ball and disfiguring the left side of
the face generally.
Morrow's partner, who witnessed
the fracas, went to the poetoffice
and telephoned to Redmond for
Deputy Sheriff McClay and Dr.
llosch.who found Morrow bleeding
badly from a number of knife cuts
in the head and face. Parties who
saw the fight say that bottles, rocks
and knives were used in disfigur
ing Morrow after he was down.
Ir. llofch took Morrow to Red
mond and some fifty stitches were
necessary to close the wounds.
Sheriff Elkins was in the country
at the time the trouble happened
and did not arrive on the scene
until Monday. Morrow refused to
swear to a complaint against any
of -the offenders, apparently satisfied
not have the case aired further.
Trouble started sometime ago at
Bend where Bryan & Youngstrom
let a subcontract for some station
work to a party of five laborers.
The work was not being done up
to standard and parts of the con
tract were ignored. It became
necessary for the original subcon
tractors to take the work back, and
in doing so the emnity of two of
the larorers was incurred.
Joe Rossi, who is considered a
bad man generally, was one of
thoee offended and he took various
means to delay the work of Bryan
& Youngstrom on the place under
dispute. It is alleged that various
threats of violence were made and
finally a
Elkins were made.
It became difficult to get laborers
to go onto the works and none of
them would sleep on the premises.
Some thirty of them quit work.
Tuesday night Cabril Balanty came
to Prineville and swore out a war
rant for the arrest of Rofsi.

failing crop for the past 29 years.
-wore commonly the orchards
none of which have been carefully
elected, cared for or protected by

large yields of fruit two years out
of three. The large crops of alfalfa
from five to seven tons to the
acre being not uncommon from
three crops make the Prineville
section especially promising for
dairying, and stock feeding. Al
falfa fed beef from near Prineville
have more than once topped the
Portland market in competition
With corn fed beef. In contrast
with nearly all parU of Central
Oregon, the crops are this year ex
ceptionally good in the Prineville
section. Some of the newly plowed
bench lands north of town are this
year producing crops of wheat that
it is estimated will thresh between
25 and 30 bushels to the acre. i
The -estimated population ol
Prineville is between 1G00 and 2000.
The town is well located and has
had electric lights and a city water
system for a number of year. Prop
erty values in and near Prineville
are conservative. A total of about
40 automobiles owned by Prineville
residents further indicate the sub
stantial wealth of the town and
section.
