Too Many Joy Rides
Prineville is out of gasoline.
There have been wood famines in
winter and flour and sugar
famines in this land of difficult
transportation, but out of gasoline
hardly ever. It is estimated that
the usual day's sale for the town is
500 gallons of "speed oil." On
Monday the report went out that
gasoline was short. Every auto
owner and man with stationary
engine was busy at once and'in an
hour the market was a blank as
far as gasoline was concerned.
The unusual demand for gaso
line all over the northwest and the
entire country make it impossible
for the oil companies to keep up
with the demand, and many of the
orders of local dealers for drum
lots or more have gone unfilled.
There is a quantity of gasoline in
Shaniko, but freight is slow and
prices very high, which will leave
Prineville out of joy rides for
several days. Some of the cars
are running as usual but many of
them are taking a rest.
Forest Service Items.
Douglas C. Ingram was in
Monday from his station on Upper
Mill Creek, getting supplies from
the headquarters here,
" Eftes Short went on duty as
ranger the first of this month with
local forest service office here and
will be stationed on Silver Creek.
Tom ,Coon will be stationed in
the Little Summit prairie country
and will have charge of the South
John Day country as well. Harry
Hamilton will have charge of the
territory between Paulina mount- j
sins and liot-land.
To date thip month Forest Super-!
visor Ireland has bad two fires
reported to him but the damage has
been slight for the reason that they
were discovered early and attended
to promptly. There will be two
more rangers added during the
next month, and tome telephone
construction, ranger cabins and
fencing on ranger grounds will be
among the tasks for the current
year.
Charles Congleton is expected to
return to. the local office during
the coming month, and will work
here in the future.
James Gilchrist resigned bis po
sition in the Paulina country and
has bought cattle and leased the
rsnches of A. J. Noble for a term
of five years.
