A Plea for Normal
School Training
Since the establishment of the
fmt normal school in the state of
New York in 1853, there has been
a. steady, persistant growth and de
velopment in the number oi
schools established in (bat state as
well as throughout the United
S'.ates, until there is no state in
the I'n'on that does not have
normal training, snve and except
Oregon alone. Ti is is an un
enviable distinction. California,
Idab and Washington, her near
est neighbors, al! generously main
tain their tormal schools. Many
of the s' ales, and most of the cities,
require their teachers to have had
training in a normal school. The
rural schools in all the states are
as justly entitled to this superior
service, it is only deniad them be
cause of the scarcity of trained
teachers, and the remedy in our
state now lies with the people

its worth and merits by the results.
The public schools must have

quired to handle the most difficult,
delicate and intricate product of
Hociet.v, the child. The Impressions a
child receives at school are the most
lusting. It stands to reason then,
that a trained teacher will give the
best returns to the state. The late
U. S. Commissioner of education, W.
T. Harris said, "The ordinary per
son sees results, hut does not take
note of the methods by which they
are produced. Hence the teacher
who has never received Instruction
la a normal school may happen to
be a good teacher, but it Is quite un
usual for him to understand how he
secures hi own results; and he Is
often not able to profit by seeing the
work of other good teachers."
The work done by the normal
school Is not antagonistic to that

liy the method proposed In the
initiative for the Monmouth Normal
Shcuool, the question Is taken
wholly out of politics. It Is fairly
put up to the voters for their Intelll
gent verdict.
Another faet, the teachers from
the normal school returns a direct,
Immediate benefit to the state. . To
use his acquired skill and knowledge
he must give the children the benefit,
and in order to earn a llvlihood, he
must, and does, teach. Of the gradu
ates of the Monmouth Normal, the
record shows that ninety-five per

teaching he gives the children the di
rect benefit of his superior training
and skill. The proposed cost for
maintaining this school In the
Initiative bill now pending. Is but the
matter of a few cents to each tax
payer. If a man pays taxes on one
thousand dollars, he will pay four
cents a year to the support of the
normal school. This money will le
expended under direction of the one
board of regents, with the secre
tary of state as the auditing official.

"Great Guna."
Probably all our readers are faiu
li at with the high re putation of the
J. Stevens Arras A Tool Co. and the
line of guna and rifle, which bas
made the nam of "Stevens'' famous
It is possible, however, that com
paratively few realixe the great
strides toward perfection which are
constantly Wing made.
Mr. John Urowning, an inventor
of international prominence, has
designed what is now on the market
as the Stevens Il.inimerless Repeat
ing Shotgun, No. 520. It ia so
modern in its lines and so superior
in its special features that a great
populaiity is assured for it.
This new gun is equally well
adapted to trap or field work and is
still futher appreciated because of
its very moderate cost. The bar
rel is of Stevens compressed
forged steel, and is as strong at it is
possible to make a shotgun barrel.
It is 12 gauge and chambered to
take a J inch shell. The finish is
in black oxide which gives a beauti
ful and lasting appearance.
One of the most valuable features
of this gun is that none of the
interior parts protrude or interfere
with the free and safe handling of
it, while its simplicity makes it
possible to take it down or put it
together more quickly than any
repeating gun on the market.
The slide handle, locking block,
firing pin and safety device have
each been the object of special etudy
with the result that fcr general lire
the Stevens Repeating Shotgun No.
520, stands cs the latest and the
ben contribution to the needs of the
gunner.
Thousands of these unique pieces
are already in use and are receiving
the highest praise for certainty and
ease of operation as well as for the
extreme of convenience and satisfac
tion generally. Any of our readers
who may be"thinking gun" may be
helped to wise choice by the
particulars regarding the new 520
model or any of the standard pieces
made by this well-known firm by
sending six cents in stamps to the
J. Stevens Arms & Tool Company,
C'bicopee Falls, Mass. This covers
postage on their free booklet which
contains a lot of in'eresiing matter
for the sportsman.
