Mrs. S. J. LaFollette
Tells of Progress
Portland has a vUitor this week,
Mrs. Sophia La Follette, ?i) years
old and first couoin ot United
State. Senator Hubert La Follotta
of Wisconsin. While her cousin
is famous in his way, Mrs. La Fol
lotts is equally well known in her
wsy, says the Journal. She is the
proprietor of a big ranch near
Frinsvillosnd manage it 'herself.
She is a gueet at the Lenox hotel.
Mrs. La Follette bits been in
On-gon since lSi'2, when, with her
husband, she came across the
plains in an ox train. She has
been a resident ot Crook county for
S5 years and has one of the most
valuable ranches in that section,
besides owning a large tract on
which Prineville U built.
Mm. La Follette is known all
over central Oregon. She person
ally manage her uoeh, making the
rounds of the various fields by
horse and buggy. White she does
- not gel around to vicit ber neigh
bors as of former day, Mrs. La
Follette manages to cover much ol
the central Oregon country during
the summer, and is a clow student
ol the progress of the irrigated sec
tion. "Thirty-fire years ago, when 1
first went to the IVschutes valley,
the countrv a short distance back
front the river was nothing but a
mass of sage brush and juniper,"
said Mrs. La Follette.
"Now you can see hundreds of
farms on this land producing big
crops of alfalfa. It is wonderful
what a msgio touch water ha.
We never dreamed that this vant
country could ever be made to pro
duce anything, but just look at it
now."
Comet's Tail May
Brush the Earth
On May 18, between 4 o'clock
F. M. and 10 o'clock 1 M.7 Hal
ley's comet will come closest to the
earth, according to Professor
Charles P.urkhalter, of the Chabot
Observatory. Professor Purk
halter refuses to predict as to the
consequences to the earth. He
says the display will be spectacular
and that the effect will be seen
best on the Pacific Coast. He said:
"According to the computations,
llalley's comet will reach the de
scending node on May IS, 1010,
when it will he in a direct line: be
tween the orbits of -tho earth and
sun, and it so happens that the
earth will reach that particular
point cf its orbit about the same
lime. Should the calculations of
the astronomers prove to be rigidly
exact, the comet will pass directly
between the earth and the sun be
tween the hours of 4 and lOo'clock,
standard Pacifio time.
"Assuming that ft will happen
during the middle of this time, or
7 P. XL, it will be visible over the
Develop Power.

Pacific Ocean, Eastern Asia and
Western Sorlh America. The sun
will have set in the Eastern part of
the I'uited States, and the comet
will be therefore iuvsible to all
parts of the country on that side of
thd Kltrfev MannUinii Thiu tec
have on the Western edi? of tht'iip
continent an opportunity of ohserv
ing this transit that is absolutely
uuique and without precedent in
the history of the comet.
"Another feature of the visit lies
in the feet of the nearness of
future possible ue of thin energy is
seen to be a most interesting sub
ject for speculation.
The two other power sites in the
first 50 miles ot the IVschutes Can
yon from its month are the pro
posed Cioverument irrigation pro
ject and the Sherar's Pridga site.
By raising the water to an eleva
tion of t0 feet at these respective
sites it is conservatively estimated
that at least 40,000 horsepower
electrical energy can be generated
at each. The three sites projected
in the present railway work thus
offer to the country something like
140,000 horsepower when fully de
veloped, sll of which will be not to
exceed 50 miles from the Columbia
River, With such a surfeit of elec
tric power, everything in the nature
of rolling stock, manufacturing,
healing, lighting and other indus
trial requirements can be furnished
to that community at a low figure,
and yet leave big horsepower for
pumping water to irrigation proj
